HARLEY RIDERS in Terrace were challenged to a softball match by the girls Bantam team. They lost. Bantams go hog wild THEY MAY ride mean machines, but they sure can’t play ball. Thal’s what the girls of Terrace Sofibali’s Bantam Division found out September 15th, when they playcd a group of Harley Davidson owners, The 15 and 16-year-olds whipped the biker’s butts in the first game of the day, and then did it again in the second. “These guys are a riot,’” says the girl's coach Marilyn Brown. ‘But lbey definitely don’t play ball. The girls were stealing bases and the guys didn’t know what to do.” The game came about when Bantam player Jessica Gordon challenged her Harley-riding father, Terry, to a soft- ball game. So he rounded up other bikers and they all thought it was a great idea. The bikers weren’t too much of a challenge for the girls in the first game. But they showed some poten- tial by the second match, although they still lost 13-6. Brown says the challenge is great fun, and good practice for the players, whose softball season ended back in June. After the games, the bikers took the girls for a ride on their hogs, and they even stopped off at the ice cream par- lour for a scoop. ‘You should have seen all the heads turning when they were riding through town,”? Brown says. ''The girls were shouting to their friends and everyone was waving.’” Now Brown says she hopes to turn the challenge into an annual event. “I definitely hope this will become a once or twice-a-year thing,’’ she says, ‘The girls had a great time.’’ As for the bikers, they had such a good time that they are thinking of challenging other community groups to softball games — maybe even the RCMP.. FROM FRONT Device delivers For quality fresh eggs produced right FARMS LTD curlers relief So McGowan and Llewellyn worked together, per- fecting the design. Now Llewellyn is back in the game, and he’s curling at 95 per cent of what he was able to do before the accident, McGowan now has three models of the curling aid — one for lofting, one for sliding, and one for the in- creasingly popular sport of floor curling. They are the first aids of their kind, something McGowan found out after doing a world-wide patent search. “There’s nothing like this out there,”” McGowan says. “But [ laughed myself silly at all the different types of curling brushes that are patented. Some of them look like egg beaters!’? Now, with a palent pending on his invention, McGowan is expecting a rosy future for his product that he says ideally would be made in Terrace, “There’s 1.2 million curlers in North America,’’ he says. ‘‘And God knows how many ex-curlers. I just have to find them,”’ Terrace, B.C. here-in:the Northwest,-you just can’t get any fresher! Anna struggled into the bus, shoved her bag under her arm while she paid her fare. “Anna, come sit with me.” She turned to see Betty, Anna shuffled over and sat beside her — friend. ; “So what's new? How are things?” Anna asked. “T can’t believe what this world ia coming to. Read this article.” Betty shoved the paper into Anna’s hands, “It makes your hair stand on end. Father does horrible things to his daughters and the mother doesn’t do a thing, She should be punished.” Anna read the article. Her face grew sad, “Nobody ever thinks about the torment the mother goes through. That maybe she’s also terrified of her husband. My husband was like that. But I don’t want to talk about it.” Betty looked at Anna. “Why so sad, Anna? Is something wrong. How are you feeling?” Anna sighed. “Terrible. I can hardly make a living. With times being so tough, not many people want a cleaning woman. They do the work themselves, At 61, I can't do anything else. But I haven't got enough even to eat.” Betty was sympathetic. “That must be just terrible. Have you thought of asking your five kids to help you? They’re all grown up. Three have gone to university. They ail work. Between the five of them, it wouldn't cost each that much money.” Anna looked glum. "T've tried, They won't.” Betty looked concerned. “That's awful. So ungrateful and all you've done for them, bringing them into the world, supporting them. Hey, look at this article I was juat reading. The court ordered these Based On Actual Court Cases grown-up kids to support their parents, If ’ T-were you I would take them to court.” Anna was shocked, “A mother sue her children. I could never do that.” Betty persisted, “Anna, that other woman who sued is not starving. Listen to me, don't starve. Sue instead.” Anna sued, In court, Anna argued, “Your honor, I have had a hard life, My husband was an alcoholic, He was physically and emotionally abusiva. I did my best to raise my children, I think I did good. Three of them went to university, They earn good money, The law says children must provide support for their parents who cared or provided support for them. Make them help their mamma pay the rent and buy groceries,” The children protested angrily. “Your honor, the law raquires that children support their parents if their parents gave them care and support. Our mother did ‘ not care or support us, She didn’t protect two daughters from sexual abuse. She used harsh physical punishment, She didn’t instill in us any sense of self-worth. She actually damaged ua psychologically and emotionally. For that she wants us to support her. No way,” Should the children financially support Anna? YOU! BE THE JUDGE.
