City will introduce voluntary recycling — TERRACE — The Ter- race municipal council has endorsed in principle the - idea of voluntary trash recycling and has resolved to begin a public educa- ‘tion and awareness pro- gram to promote recycl- ing. City planner Rob Greno has received material from - Ottawa and the District of Saanich indicating that there could be several local benefits from better conservation practices. If paper, glass. and metal items were absent from _ the normal garbage pick- up, costs to the municipality would be reduced and the life expec- tancy of the local landfill would be extended by several years. Greno also speculated that new in- dustries could grow up. . around the recycling of ‘materials.:. “The use of recycled materials in paper manufacturing and metal production reduces costs by an average of 35 -per- cent,’’ Greno said. He also pointed out that jobs in recycling might provide employment opportunities for groups such as the mentally handicapped, who are traditionally ex- cluded from the mainstream workforce. The-only type of recycl- ing presently operating in Terrace is directed toward Fo rest st ri ke over — continued from page 1 ‘These are the same recommendations we have been looking for from the Production to be held TERRACE — Starting Friday, Dec. 12 the Ter- race Little Theatre will stage six performances of their Christmas play at the Terrace Little Theatre. by Philip Musselman The performances will take place Dec, 12 at 7 p.m., Dec. 13 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. and Dec. 14 at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. The play is mainly for children, but everyone is welcome. Individual tickets will be $2 and family tickets will be $5. The Dec. 14 performance staged at 11 a.m. will be for Co-op employees only. _ All the performances will feature the ap- pearance of Santa Claus. Little Theatre represen- tatives report that the play has received strong sup- port from the Terrace Safeway, the Terrace Co- op and Terrace Interiors. It promises to be a lot of fun. beginning, it’s exactly what we wanted,’? Mal- hotra said. ‘‘If this had been proposed at the start, the dispute would have been over four months ago.”’ . The Truck Loggers’ proposal is a two-year contract retroactive to June 15; 1986, with no wage increase in the first year and an average in- crease of 40 cents an hour in the second year. Pen- sion benefits will increase $§ per month for each year of service to $25 a month per service year, and IWA members will have the option of retiring at age 60 with full pen- sion. Members retiring at age 55 will receive 82 per- cent of full pension. Malhotra said members who have been out of work since 1983 will not be penalized on their pen- sion for breaks in service during that period. The issue of contract- ing-out, the core of the lengthy dispute, will be addressed by a Royal Commission. The Com- mission is ordered to report no later than Feb. 1, 1988, with its recom- mendations regarding job protection for IWA members and scheduling reuse of ° glass, Terrace Recycling accepts’ used bottles from the public and provides employment training for disabled peo- ple on a referral basis from Terrace and District Community Services. Greno suggested that private companies might be persuaded to undertake paper and metal recycling operations here if Terrace could become a regional collection center. Greno points out that there could be social benefits as well, par- ticularly from educating young people in the com- munity about environ- mentally responsible lifestyles. flexibility for the employers. It is expected the recommendations will be filed in time to be ex- amined before the expiry of the proposed contract on June 15, 1988. The critical provision for the IWA in the proposal is a _ freeze on contracting-out during the period of the agreement, Malhotra concluded by saying the strike was ‘‘definitely worthwhile’. Don Saunders, chair- man and chief. executive officer of FIR, said in a telephone interview from Vancouver, ‘‘Everyone’s grateful that it’s all over. It’s our proposal and we're recommending that the member companies ac- cept it.’’ The FIR members will vote today (Dec. 10) on the agree- ment, Saunders said he ex- pects the recommenda- tions from the Royal Commission to set an en- vironment for a collective agreement in 1988 and to provide a framework for bargaining between the FIR and the [WA. Latest estimates from a number of sources in- dicate the strike cost the B.C. economy more than $2 billion in direct losses.
