PAGE 8 THE HERALD, Thursday, March 23, 1974 Rivers & Shores | by Jim Culp Easter weekend fishing With the Spring weather melting the valley bottom snow pack and generally Peking up the spirlt of you and I— this Fong Easter weekend will likely see considerable angling and outdoor activity. + Jea will still be on most of our Interior Lakes so there is no possibility of unlimbering the fly rod or trolllng outfit. Ice fishing is still worth a try, although the valley bottom Lakes could be chowing some rotten ice with the last week of mild weather, Generally speaking the best opportunity for a fishing weekend would appear to be a salt water trip — if youhave a good sea worthy boat — or you know someone who will share their boat with you. The contacts that J have made ‘have indicated there has been steady salmon fishing in Kitimat Arm all winter, with no slacking off in recent weeks, Chinooks from 6 to 20 pounds have been taking herring strip, strip teasers and herring and I am sure the many variety of lures used for trolling. Most of the fish seem to be found in depths from 30’ ta60’. The most productive method for getting down to the feeding chinooke is with the popular downriggers, which have a heavy 5-10 pound lead weights suspended on 100 pound test wire Hne, which in turn is coiled onto a hand gurdy mounted onto either side of the boat. Rather than hooking upheavy 6 to 16 cunce lead weights to ones trolling line, the line fastens to a release clip which is mounted on the downrigger cable. The herring strip or whatever lure that is used is tied in a normal way to the trolling line, There is no interference from the downrigger cable with the herring strip and flasher working in the usual way, — the advantage being that whatever wepth the downrigger weight is lowered to, that is the depth where you are fishing. Thegreat benefit of ihe downrigger is once a fish ishooked, the fishing line rdeases from the downrigger cable allowing the angler to play the fish without any heavy weights restricting its movements. ; While the downrigger method is very productive, I belleve mooching is the most sporting way to.go and just as productive, once you have learned where to fish. A jong Umber rod of about 10 feet anda single action reel are used — the boat is stopped or anchored in one spot and the angler lowers alive herringor herring strip to within approximately 12 feet of the bottom and waits for a chinook to come along and grab the bait. Very few salt water anglers mooch in our area, which is hard to understand. Only 1 to 3 ounces of _ weight, with no herring dodger or flasher are used to get the _ bait down to. where the big ones are lurking. Since our Salt water bays and inlets can be very clear this time of year, 12 pound test leaders or less are recommended — all in all it is. a productive sporting way to fish! Give it a whirl this weekend. As well as the salmon fishing, I understand crab fishing has been quite good, And if the salmon are not biting, there are many varieties of rockfish, ling cod, halibut, ete. to be had. They can bethe finest fish to eat, — better in my estimation than salmon or trout. - . The Kithmat can likewise be spotty and it is still early for the best fishing. Fiy fishing for cutthroat and dolly varden, feeding on salmon fry, ls most productive in the Lakelse and Kitimat rivers. Unfortunately, once again it isa bit early for yesults, The water in these two rivers has not warmed up enough to move the salmon fry and alevins out of the gravel, a5 a result the cutts and dollies just won’t be showing in large numbers. While I haven’t personally fished in the Kitimat river estuary of Minette Bay for cutthroat, I wouldn't be surprised if there is some excellent fly fishing this time of year for these scrappy fish, Try a tled-down-minnow pattern or any fly imitation of a smail fish. If its exploration or something different for the weekend, this could be a good bet, If you should to to the Lakelse river, don't forget — from the C.N. Railroad bridge upstream to Lakelse Lake, ifs ‘fly fishing only’ — no roe, baits or other lures are allowed. A person must use a fly rod, reel and line and release carefully any dark or spawning steelhead that are caught. _ A good angling weekend to all, - ; FOR PRIVATE USE OR BUSINESS _ AUTOVEST Before yau buy, Investigate the advantages of this rent- to-own plan.
