INVESTIGATORS LOOKING into a May 25 aircraft crash which killed six people near Stewart hope film recovered from cameras belonging to passengers will provide some clues. **There were cameras inside the wreckage.” Whether they'll ‘be useful or not, we don't know yet,” sald Doug Worden of the National Transportation Safety Board last weck. The cameras were recovered during a brief visit by investi- gators to the site after the crash, They may contain pictures of atmospheric conditions during the time leading up to the accident. It’s still far too early to venture a cause for the accident, said Worden, But weather in the area was bad the time of the accident, The aircraft hasn’t been removed because of avalanche dangers and the possibility of falling ice from above the site. “We had expert advice from avalanche technicians and they said it was not safe to be there,’’ said Worden. The Blue Ice Flightseeing Cherokee 6 ran into bad weather and: struck’ the side of Frank Mackie glacier. “Tt was a hard decision to make, but we did not want to risk anything happening,” said Wor- den. '*There’s quite steep terrain at the site.” He said attempis to recover the Large crowd attends service MORE THAN 500 people at- tended a memorial service in Stewart May 31 for local resident Dave Blais, the pilot of an aircraft who died with five passengers when it crashed in bad weather on a glacier near Stewart May 25. “T suspect every adult’ in © Stewart was there. It was very crowded,”’ said Stewart mayor Andy Burton of the service held in the lown’s high school gym. “Dave was very well liked in ihe community. You don’t realize how much somebody means to people until something like this happens,’’ he said. Blais was taking the five people — all tourists, including one from Coquitlam — on a one-hour sightseeing tour of Slewart-area glaciers the afternoon of May 25. The wreckage of his Cherokee 6 aircraft was found in carly eve- ning of the same day, several hours afler it was reported miss- ing, Blais ran the sight secing trips under the name of Blue Ice Flightsceing, He was also a newly elected Stewart town councillor. A culogy at the service was given by Gary Hubbard, a former mayor of Stewart. A number of other people make brief com- ments, The National Transportation Safety Board is now investigating the accident. Bad weather hampered efforts to first search the crash site and then to remove bodies. Armed forces personnel were finally able to gain access to the site to remove bodies three days after the crash. Involved in first the search and then the retrieval were armed forces search and rescue aircraft from Vancouver Island, the Cana- dian Coast: Guard and the U.S, Coast Guard. All five passengers killed were members of a Los Angeles-based American Travel Tours group. They are Fleur Pichon of London, England, Louis Michael Couvillion of Los Angeles, Brian Derrick of Port Coquitlam, Chris- ting McCarthy of Rotorua, New Zealand, and Jennifer Francis of Burwood, Australia. Examining the wreckage will form a large part of the investiga- tion into’ the’cause of the crash. For now, investigators arc pour- ing over the aircraft’s “records, those of the company, looking at weather information and are in- icrviewing witnesses. “We've interviewed a number of people and have witnesses to the take off of the aircraft,’ said Worden. Although the resulis of the crash were tragic, Captain Dave Mansi of the Rescue Co- ordination Centre in Victoria said the search partion went very well, ‘*The aircraft was found almost immediately in the hours just after it was reported overdue,”’ said Mansi. A Canadian Forces search and rescue Buffalo aircraft from the 442 Squadron in Comox was in the area right away and picked up the signal from the Cherokee’s Le en Lia emergency location transmitter, Two armed forces search and rescue i¢chnicians were trans- ferred from the Buffalo to a Ca- nadian Coast Guard helicopter at Stewart atid taken to a spot near the crash. - They found-two bodies but bad weather prevented further search- ing and the technicians were flown out after spending the night Victims’ cameras might | hold clues to air crash near the crash. — ‘Weather was definitely a fac- ior. It played havoc out ther. It was risky and very hazardous fly- ing,” said Mansi of several days of cfforts to remove the bedies before the weather improved. “‘Had there. been. survivors, il would definitely have altered the decisions that were made,’’ the captain continued.
