JESSIE GIES PHOTO Work together for offshore oil strategy, former premier urges By JEFF NAGEL COASTAL TOWNS must unite and work together as offshore oil and gas exploralion moves forward, says the head of a Nanaimo-based group. Brian Petkford, former premier of Newfoundland and now chair of the Pacific Offshore Energy Association, says his group is: the logical umbrel- fa organization to deal with local concerns up and down the coast. He says the group’s goal is to pro- mote responsible development of offshore oil, while simultaneously pressing to maximize the local benefits so local workers and com- panies aren’t left out. Peckford was here to drum up support — and to counter arguments from the Prince Rupert-based B.C. Offshore Oil. and. Gas Association that they are trying to hijack the fu- ture offshore industry so it can be based in Nanaimo instead. He said that’s not the case, add- ing everyone could lose out if they confuse the industry by operating as welcome See eee er re ee ae a Skeena Mall - *Gucci *Ralph Lauren ¢Harry Potter *Flexon * Silhouette *Easy Clip Dr. S, Lee and Dr. J. Apparently divergent paths taken by federal, provincial and aboriginal leaders on the offshore issue have sown confusion, Peckford added. ; ~-Heesnid-the-province has Seed: . ded with ‘Méasures and studies to | move forward, while Ottawa has em- barked on separate studies, and Haida leaders have meanwhile filed a court claim for aboriginal title to the seabed. All three need to get together and work from the same page if the off- shore industry is to take root. Peckford estimated it will be three to five years before the various jurisdictions agree to an accord on how the offshore would be developed and -how,revenues will be shared. While that time lag dismays some, Peckford said it’s crucial win- dow for coastal towns to get their priorities straight and get their busi- nesses and workers prepared, “We need all that time to get ready,” he said.
