In May, 1944, Alice and her husband Jack McCol- Joch along with John and Odette de Kergommeaux were the first people to travel on the new road from Terrace to Hazelton. The reason for the May 1944 trip was to buy a new cat for John’s taxi service. The official opening of the new road, which opened up the Skeena to other parts of Canada, was Labour Day, Sept. 4, 1944. Alice Jilena McColloch (Werobec) was born Oct, 19, 1918 in Prince Rupert. Because of the flu epidemic at the time, Alice was born at home on 9th Avenue East in Rupert. When Alice was old enough to ga to school, she attended Booth Memorial School. Her first teacher was Miss Marsh, the daughter of Rev. Marsh, who was the first Anglican minister in Terrace. Once she finished school, Alice was never allowed to find a job. She said her fa- ther, Jobn Worobec, would not hear of his daughter going oul and looking for a job. He felt that it was his duty to support her, Mary was a_ very strong pioneer woman. She worked at clearing the land with just and axe and shovel. Alice felt a bit sorry that she never had that op- portunity, like other young giris, to work outside of the home. Alice’s parents were John and Mary Worobec. Alice had a brother, Nickic, who was the first born, but, sad- ly, he died when he was only five years old. John and Mary Worobec came ta Prince Rupert in 1912 from Poland. John had a job working for the Grand Trunk Railway asa labourer. In 192i, John and Mary Worobcc bought 10 acres of land at 5104 McConnell Ave. From this time on, they travelled by train to Terrace to clear their land. Actually, it was mostly Mary who came alone. Mary was a very strong pioncer woman. She worked at clearing the land with just and axe and shovel. Ft was a tot of hard work. In 1937, the Worobec family moved to Terrace to live, therefore, Alice has been a resident of Terrace for 62 years. Iu Terrace, Alice met and married ler husband Jack McCulloch, They were married Oct. 24, 1940 by Rev. Arthur Hinchcliffe at home on McConnell Ave, Jack and Alice had two sons, Robert and Leonard. Start brushing gums before teeth appear to have yourself and your child used to a routine. Use a very soft bristled toothbrush or damp face cloth. Do not use toothpaste until teeth appear. At this stage you can use a pea-sized dab of CDA approved toothpaste. CDA approved toathpaste contain fluoride which strengthens the enamel on teeth. Replace toothbrushes every 3-4 months as old fraying toothbrushes can harm your child’s gums. Park Avenue Dental Clinic 4619 Park Ave., Terrace, B.C.
