_LETTERS TO THE TERRACE STANDARD Rillope unique Dear Sir: The Killope watershed ‘represents a smali fraction of the wood (chips) that is re- ‘quired to run the Eurocan mill -- I believe somewhere around 3 or 4 per cent. .: Apparently the Wedeene “wood. ftom Prince Rupert ‘would < replace’ the. Angler gets barb Dear Sir: I read Rob Bronw’s ‘‘Skeena Angler’’ periodically, hoping to ‘pick up some tips on fishing. As a-rule, I have found it both interesting and informative. As a Christian however, I took particu- lar offense at his May 26 entry. Iam also abhorred at the pres- ent state ofthe environment and the polluted water which many of our fellow human beings are forced to drink. What I found offensive about Mr. Brown's drlticle was his in- ference that Christianity is in- herently an exploitative system insofar as the environment is con- cemed. ._ It is true that God gave man. authority over the earth, along with His express permission to ‘subdue’? it. However, he also commended man to be a good steward of creation; to “‘tend’’ the garden and ‘‘take care of it”’ (Genesis 2:15). There have been times when some Christians have emphasized “sutduing’’ the earth (under- stand and use nature for man’s benefit) rather than ‘‘tending’’ it. Talso admit that presently many Christians do not take time for environmental issues {it-must be kept in mind, of course, -that Christians are not.alone here) or make a concerted effort to under- stand and do something construc- tive toward solving the. present ecological crises. That bothers me. However, this has not been ex- clusively the case on the part of all who profess faith in Chris- tianity. Those who study, the Bible on a deeper level can easily see that a truly biblical Christian world view is one, which decries the exploitation of nature. ‘This is the view that I subscribe to and it irks me that Mr. Brown misinforms. his reading audience in regard to what the biblical mandate really is. It reflects a biased opinion (is it About day care Dear Sir: We were one of the concerned families that attended’ the city council meeting on April 5, 1993 to object to a day care business being built on Ri zone. We bought property over 30 years ago to raise a family in a quiet neighbourhood and away from down town business. What kind of a street would this be if everybody was allowed to have a business in their dwelling. The concerned street is a busy one, with no side walks, school buses twice a day, children walk- ing to and from school -as there are schools at. both ends of this dead end street. . At the meeting we attended, they said there would be eight children in their day care home. But their letter in the paper stated a 16-child day care business. What's stopping them from hav- ing 32 children to make mor money. This much iraffic, twice a day, we don’t need. They lefi the meeting very frustrated and some what angry. We all 15 felt the same way when the council did not reject the matter. Why does our council bother then turns around and changes them to suit making by-laws, whoever. We as tax payers think it’s time for a new slate in our council. Besides, our so called, “dominant religion’ (Chris- tianity) does not really dominate our culture anymore. We live ina pluralistic and very secular society. If you don’t believe that, just try to institute morning prayer in the classrooms of our schools. So, Mr. Brown, tell me more about the present ecological crises.
