Agri- culture, giving market statistics for the last year, is of importance as showing the extent of the home market tor agricultural products. We learn that the total importations of dairy and poultry products into British Columbia for the year 1911 were as follows:— : : Butter - - . - -. - 1... - $954,908 "Milk (including condensed) and cream - 373,667 Eegs- - - +--+ eee. se. 973,183 Poultry ---. --- -. 2.02. 1,142,735 _ 654,706 Cheese - - - 5-22-0222. Total - - - = - ~~ ~ ~ $4,099,149 lixcluding cheese, of which practically none is made in British Columbia, there is a lotal of $3,500,000 sent out of the province an- nually for articles which should be produced at home. _ The year’s importationg of fresh meats, including bacon and and ham, mutton ‘and lamb, pork and lard, total $1,260,091, whilst beef cattle; sheep and swine were imported to the value of $1,260,- 510. | , BF In the past year there has beenanoticeable increase in the con- suming-capacity of Prairie markets, due mainly to increased popu- lation, and algo to the fact, that dlate and wet season there furnished an unusually favorable market for early vegetables. There has also been an ineréased demand for British Columbia apples from Australian houses, and for all fruits-and vegetables from Coast markets. The home markets, however, fall far short of-being supplied, © ; Bo The greatest increase in consumption of food products. during the past year has been in bacon and ham, mutton and lamb, pork, eggs, and poultry. The value‘of daiiy produce (exclusive bf amilk): importations amounted to $1,609,614, and the valuevof. dressed. poul- try and egg impottations amounted to $2;116,868, te The home production’ of dairy produce {exclusive “of milk) amounted in value to $985, 462, or 61 percent, of the market demand, The demand also for dressed poultry and eggs, was $1,234,472 in ox- ceas of the home supply. A satisfactory feature of the ‘year -has | ! been an increase in the supply of home-produced milk, valued at $3, 295,000, and eggs, valued at $255,-112, Eggs, however, show a still greater, increase in importations from the United States and Canadian Provinces, the increase from the former being 312.8 per cent., and from the latter 280.7 per cent. on'the values for 1910, . Therapid growth of city population has resulted in an increased demand for milk, which has affected the quantity of butter manu. factured. 4 ” The inereased demand for mutton and pork has not been. met with a corresponding development in the faising of sheep.and swine, the numbers of the former showing a lessened production’ during _ the year. oe no ee we _ - Asinthe past year, the heaviest ‘importations in live-atock have beén in horses, beef cattle and sheep, the United: States im- ports of horses showing the. very large increase of 800 per cent, . _~ Correspondence Editor: Miner:If the’ Grand Trunk Pacific has a policy. more definite than the proposed line to .
