The stand for Everyone loves to have a one- of-a-kind conversalion piece and if it’s useful so much the ‘better. -Here you see the amazing resulls one can gel from a piece of driftwood. These pieces were done by Mrs. Violet Rigler of 946 Paquelte in Thoruhill. Mrs. Rigler, who is originally from Prince George, has-been living in Terrace for ~ nine years...She has been doing - this beautiful work for five years, She saw a driftwood _ lamp in one of the stores here in ' Terrace. woman, she decided to try her Being a practical hand at it. The resulls of her first try turned into a small hobby then a small business. . She sells many of the lamps and lables that she makes. ‘The: driflwood she uses fs _ collected along the Skeena River. After bringing it home It is lefi lo dry. Depending on its size it may take up to a year to dry, After the wood is com- ; pletely cured and dried she goes lo work on it. ‘Where the wood grain is wanted Lo show through itis carefully sanded. Then itis lrealed with a plastic coating. She does not use any Lype of stain because’ she believes: it~ would be a. pliy ta distort the beautiful grain and the aged colouring of the pieces. The coating Mrs. Rigler uses is Varathene’ plastic coating. After a light re-sanding and a second coaling of plastic the pieceis ready to be turnedinto a lamp or a.table, - The driftwood is used as is. No cutting is done unless a broken edge or loose piece is unattractive. Generally, the shape and size of wood dictales the style and kind of article which is made. If a lamp is to be made a hole is drilled through it. A piece of copper tube is then inserted about half an inch into the hole, Aboul (three inches remains outside of the wood, The cord is then passed up through the hole and ‘the copper tube and then attached to the lamp fixture. A shade is then put on and a piece of felt glued to the bottom (to the back if it is to be wali hung) to prevent the “wood from scratching and damaging surfaces it comes into, contact with. The tables are made from a slab cut from a crossection of a tree. The bases are of drift-. wood. The wood is treated in the same way.as that for lamps. The tops are joined to the base from the bottom with large wood screws. Mrs. Rigler lets cher husband take care of this joining process. He decides where and haw many screws are to be used. One beautiful combination lamp and table which we were ‘unable to gel a picture of was made of-a solid piece of drift-: wood about three feet long with projections of about two feet high at one end. The lamp is worked in at the low end. The other end has a flat piece al- tached which would be perfect to hold an ashtray or a bowl of peanuts. In the center there is a natural hollow thal could hold a planter, This charming and altractive - - plece is well worth the seventy “dollars that Mrs, Rigler is” asking for it, " She has algo worked beautiful combinations of empty bottles ‘and driftwood together,’ The bottles are filled with artificial Mowers. The driftwood lamp is then fo formed to fit the neck of the Ut Mrs. Riglet also does work to specification. Just a few weeks ago she was asked to use a, wagon wheel hub to make a lamp. Since the hub is hollow she hung a small bulb inside of it. Then she placed a driftwood lamp at the top. The two lamps work separately so they may be used singley or togetlier. | The lamps she makes are for. sale, They .range.in price from twenty to thirty dollars.
