Psychiatry Critic Against School Counsellors

School counselling and
therapy is nothing more
than an attempt to “‘box
and stringently control”
youngsters,. says Dr.
Thomas Szasz, author
and well-known critic of
psychiatry.

At a recent conference
here, Szasz called family
therapy “family. but-
chery,”’ referred to

psychiatrists as ‘‘jailers.

masquerading as
mechanics” and said the
profession is ‘only as old
as the idea of locking
someone up in a hospita
or institution,”

Szasz, a professor of
psychiatry at Upstate

Medical Centre in
Syracuse, N.Y., has
criticized psychiatry in
such books as The Myth
of Mental Illness and
Manufacture of Madness.

He said what often is
termed mental illness is
merely variation from
the norm.

Szasz said he does not
advocate abolishing
therapy and counselling
but that it should be
sought privately and
practised only on in-
dividuals who freely
choose it.

He said the state should
stop subsidizing -

psychiatry through
medical _ plans and
schools should abandon‘
coercive methods such as
forcing parents to seek
psychiatric help for a
child with behavior
problems on the threat of
expulsion from school.

sin,” he said. “And those
who helieve in com-
ulsory treatment should
be condemned as.
criminals and
prosecuted.

“Tf a family needs
counselling they should

fet it outside the school,

Mental illness is an
overwhelming stigma
especially to a child who
cannot distinguish be-
tween counselling and
various therapies, he
sald.

“The right of treatment
and the right to refuse
treatment should be left
to the individual.”

Although social control
is necessary, he said, ‘‘it
should not be disguised
by therapeutic —vo-
cabulary but should be
determined by the family
and legal means ”
