_ The year 1982 will continue to bea year of peace. It won that dis-
tinction when more than 35,000 marched on Apr. 24. And untold
thousands are expected to repeat, and possibly surpass that per-
formance, at Peace Arch park on the international border June 12.
The Tribune, always an advocate of world peace as well as workers’
Struggles will be there, and we hope you will be there too.

The Tribune and its predecessors have been on the front lines of
‘People’s struggles — whether these be for peace, work or wages —
ever since the beginning of the working-class press here in 1935. Soit
seems appropriate to once again remind readers, whose financial

Saturday was the fourth anniversary of a massacre of
Guatemalan peasants which has since become a rallying date
for that country’s liberation forces. In commemoration, a
small group of people gathered at Robson Square to observe
the May 29, 1978 slaughter of more than 150 men, women ard
children in the village of Panzos in northern Guatemala. The
Mayan Indian campesinos were gunned down by government
groups as the group attempted to petition the mayor over the
seizure of peasant lands. The revolutionary forces have since
used “this sorrowful date” to publicize the continued repres-
sion of-Guatemala’s largely native population and the loss of
their lands for resource_exploitation by foreign, mainly U.S.
multinational corporations. Speakers from other Latin
American support groups read messages of solidarity, but like

Danger grows as U.S.
sets d’Aubuisson visit

The forthcoming visit to the
U.S. of El Salvador’s new leader of
the constituent assembly, death
squad _ leader Roberto
d’Aubuisson, is expected to con-
summate the political marriage
that has already been arranged —
between the Reagan administra-
tion and the right wing terrorist.

Although no firm date has been
set on the visit, d’Aubuisson has
already had the way cleared with
the lifting of a U.S. immigration
department ban imposed on him in
1980. And as the head of the ultra-
rightist coalition of the National
Conciliation Part — and his own
ARENA, d’Aubuisson has always
had the backing of U.S. am-
bassador Deane Hinton, himself a
CIA agent according to Julius
Mader’s 1968 list.

That the U.S. intended the
fraudulent Mar. 28 elections solely
for the purpose of giving legitimacy
to fascist dictatorship and inten-
sified repression has become in-
creasingly evident. Although under
U.S. pressure to present a facade of
“moderation,’’ the banker and
economist Alvaro Magana was ap-
pointed provisional president, real
power resides in the constituent
assembly which has assigned to
itself the. main constitutional
authority.

Any semblance of human rights
is similarily illusory. In fact,
d’ Aubuisson’s visit to the U.S. has
been planned amidst growing
evidence that he himself gave the
order to assassinate Archbishop
Oscar Romero two years ago and
today is directing death squads to
step up their activities.

On May 18, Prensa Latina
quoted the story from the Mexican
daily Excelsior which published the
secret diary of d’Aubuisson, cap-

tured two years ago by a then
member of the Salvadoran junta
Col. Adolfo Majano. Majano
recently gave the dairy to Excelsior
columnist Manuel Buendia.

One page of the diary referred to
a planned operation set for Mar.
24, 1980 — the day of Romero’s
murder — and cited details and
equipment which correspond ex-
actly to the details of the ar-
chbishop’s assassination.

Former U.S. ambassador
Robert White who has called
d’Aubuisson a ‘‘pathological
killer,’’ told a congressional com-
mittee last year that his investiga-
tion of theassassination had turned
up evidence which was ‘‘compell-
ing if not 100 percent conclusive”’
that d’Aubuisson had ordered the

slaying.

The constituent assembly leader

has been linked to several death
squads or paramilitary bands and it
has been well established that he
founded at least one, the White
Warriors. ‘

Several of the leaders of the
paramilitary bands have also been
assigned government posts since
Mar. 28, signalling the regime’s in-
tention to attempt to carry out
d’Aubuisson’s election pledge to
‘‘exterminate the guerrillas.”’

The visit by d’ Aubuisson to the
U.S. points to a heightened danger
of U.S. direct intervention, a
danger which FMLN commander
Cayetano Carpio emphasized in an
interview with Prensa Latina, May
2%:

Urging increased world solidari-
ty with FMLN-FDR, Carpio warn-
ed that the U.S. is building bases
with Honduras on the Gulf of
Fonseca at the southwestern tip of
EI Salvador.
