RIONTOIUAL COMIWIEINT Tory ‘tough’ line We'll just have to “tough it out”, said Finance Minister Crosbie, Sept. 11, seeing no economic improvement till 1981. Crosbie “toughs it out” on a $26;900 MP’s salary plus his Cabinet minister’s $20,000, plus $2,000 vehicle allowance plus a bushel of perquisites (perks for short). But his government is fiddling with slashing a number of categories from unemployment insurance benefits. That government got elected by false pretences because it promised a $2-bilion tax cut, and solutions to unemployment and inflation. A day after Crosbie’s tough talk his fellow Tory, Sinclair Stevens, treasury board chairman, looking at four-month expenditures of $1.2-billion on arms and $2.6-billion in interest to money-lenders, decided that. was the working people’s fault. “We must put the brakes on spending or cut — literally — the take-home pay of every Canadian,” said he, warn- ing of tax increases. Isn’t it time the working class taught these Tories a new meaning for “toughing it out”? 25 years ago... A resolution approved by the more than 90 non-aligned countries, repre- senting a third of humanity, positioned the movement to “take firm measures” against any country that transfers its embassy in. Israel to Israeli-occupied Jerusalem from Tel Aviv. It would be used as a measuring stick to judge a country’s sincerity in its professions of | concern for the human rights of the Middle East peoples. The resolution was a well-deserved slap in the face for the Clark govern- ment which bought votes with a promise of just such an embassy move. Amid protests from Canadians and _noti- fication from Arab governments that they would see it as an unfriendly act, Clark appointed former Tory leader, Robert Stanfield a one-man commission to come up with an answer.
