Considerable planning and pub- lic relation work has gone into the forthcoming visit to assure success, but there are stillsome question marks in relation to the possible reception of a German War Whip by the Canadian public, Captain Rehder when asked about the ‘‘new” men serving in the West German Navy and their attitudes according to the press said that ‘‘our boys are pretty well the same as they were 30 years ago, not better, not worse”. In some circles it is believed that Canadians will not take kind- ly to the forthcoming visit of a German war ship named after a famous German surface raider of World War I. Some point to the openly hostile and revanchist pol- icies of the West German Gov- ernment with its avowed aims of revising the present borders in Europe, by force if necessary. Many Canadians it seems are sceptic about the real meaning behind the forthcoming visit of a German warship, West German authorities ob- viously aware of this attitude by the Canadian public have made an all out effort to put on a “good show” — mass blood donations; ¢ gift of the aspiring officers to the Canadian people, public recep- tions, etc., are planned, Many of the goodwill activities planned are similar to those put- on by German authorities prior to the outbreak of World War II, when a German warship visited Vancouver on a similar “good- will tour’’. | wish to express my HEARTFELT THANKS to the many Comrades and Friends who sent warm words of encour- agement and wishes during my re- cent hospital confinement. | am sorry | can t reply to each of you personally.
