A10 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, March 26, 1997 Four in the running for NDP nomination ‘SKEENA NEW Democrats will choase from four names on April 19 when. they select a candidate to carry the party’s banner. in the next federal election, Two veteran politicians — former Atlin MLA Larry Guno and former North Island-Powell River MP Ray Skelly — filed nomina- lian papers by the close of nominations March 14, They join 1993 National Party candidate Isaac Sobol and = Smithers —— forestry worker Ken Alton in seck- ing the NDP nomination. Larry Guno Guno is a lawyer now working as a consultant for the Nisga’a Tribal Council. He represented Atlin from 1986 until 1991, when the consliluency disappeared as a result of redistribution. Guno, 57, was bom and raised in the Nass Valley. He also sought ihe NDP nomination in Skeena for the 1991 provincial election, “but withdrew prior to the nomination meeting, citing health problems. He's better now and back for a shot at the NDP nomination. Guno says the work he’s doing for the Nisga’a Tribal Council relates ta self- government and aboriginal justice options, and does not directly involve treaty nego- tiations. He says his background is an asset to bridge the gap between norlhwestern com- munities, “I’m a Nisga’a, very Steeped in the Nisga’a tradi- tion,’’ Guno said. ““But I’m also a Western-trained law- yer and I’ve worked in the political system, so I have a kind of perspective thet over arches both. And I see a Jot Liberals move quickly to choose candidate A SNAP NOMINATION mecting Saturday has made Rhoda Witherly the Liberal Party’s candidate in Skeena for the next federal election. Skeena MP Mike Scott was also confirmed without opposition on Saturday as the Reform Party’s candi- date here, But while Reformers said they’d allow challengers against Scott to step forward up until two weeks prior to that date, the Liberal nomination was a more lightly controlled affair. Liberal members in Skeena got official notifica- tion of the nomination meet- ing in the form of a letter that arrived Jast week — just days before the meet- ing. If any of them actually wanted (o nominate some- one, they were out of luck. Nominations had to be made 28 days prior to that, And no prior notice was given of that deadline for filing nominations. Witherly was the only candidate to file papers by that date, which apparently remained secret to all but a few party insiders. Skcena federal Liberal as- sociation president Ingrid Clark says efforts - were made to ensure members Larry Guno of opportunity for us to work together.” He also thinks the riding needs more balanced repre- sentation in Ottawa. “The Reform MP in his obsession to discredit the whole land claims mave- ment has, I think, abandon- ed the rest of the issues that need strong articulation in Ottawa.” Ray Skelly A 14-year veteran of the House of Commons, Skelly lost the 1993 federal elec- tion to Reform challenger John Duncan, who now holds the North Island- Powell River seat and is that party’s aboriginal affairs critic. Skelly pulled up stakes in Courtenay to return to his teaching career. He spent the 1995-96 school year up north in Good Hope Lake, and now is principal of the elementary school in Green- ville. Skelly says the day he was defeated he decided he was not yet aut of politics. “T made up my mind that wherever I was going to be when the next federal elec- tion was called, I was going to seek the nomination to Tun there,”’ Skelly said last week, Rhoda Witheriy knew a nomination mecting was coming. Clark said she placed ads in northwest papers and sent out Jetters to all members in February inviting them to call her if they wanted to find out more about nomina- tions. ‘*We wanted to make sure all current members who wanted to come forward had an opportunity to do so,” she said. And Clark denies sugges- tions the meeting date wasn’t made public until last Wednesday to ensure Witherly got the nod. Clark said notification of members’ here of the nomination was handled by the party’s B.C, head- quarters in Vancouver. services oro often covere Dr. Tom Strong Now Regulurly Practicing from Mills @ Relationship & Fomily Therapy © Full Ronge of Individual Psychotherapy © Toining ond Seminars © Brief results oriented © Chronic poin & illness consultations Tha costs . for peycholoic For mote information of 10 book appainiments please call: Registered Psychologist Memerial Hospital. That tured out to be Skeena and no matter what his chances, Skelly says, , having more people in the 1ace ‘strengthens the demo- cratic process.’? He says Skeena is quite similar to his old North Istand-Powell River riding. “The issues that affect this area are very much the samme issues — fishing, transportation, forestry, single-industry towns, the appetizers. Although another outside candidate —- Joe Barrett — got the NDP nomination last time and then lost the race to Reformer Mike Scott, Skelly thinks his chances are better, “T think I’ve got better depth on federal issues that affect this riding than any candidates that are running, as well as other candidates fram other parties, including the sitting member,’’ Skelly said. The challenge for the party here, he said, is to mo- bilize votes that didn’t get out in 1993. Skelly is currently collect- ing an MP’s pension for his prior years of service, but says he wouldn’t end up double dipping if he gets elected again. The pension would disappear until he leaves office again. Liberal party election readiness director Steve Kukucha also defended the nomination process, saying a local candidate search committee approached a number of potential candi- dates. *T talked to three other in- dividuals in that riding, and some were male, who declined to run,’? Kukucha said. ‘‘People have been aware for a long time we've been out looking for candi- dates and the meeting date’s were imminent.”’ Witherly finished a sur- prisingly solid second to Scott in 1993, With the Liberals leading strongly in national polls, the party’s candidate here probably gives them the best chance in years to take the riding. There hasn’t been a Liber- al MP in Skeena since Iona Campagnolo represented the riding in the late 1970s. Witherly's nomination also helps prime minister Jean Chretien fulfill his commitment to make sure at least 25 per cent of Liberal candidates are women. Chretien has come under fire for saying he’ll override the nomination process and appoint female candidates in some ridings to reach that goal. eee ae Look... a sedan that understands your needs.
