“River, Alberta and raised near
‘Okotoks, Alberta, Ken’s family
were farming people, with four
boys to help out around the farm.
Ken’s work with mining con-
struction took him to Kimberly,
Vancouver, Quesnel and . Ed-
‘monton. In 1960 he came to Ter-
race to visit friends and decided
“to stay..
"Ken. worked at the Terrace
Skeena and Lakelse hotels over
‘the. years. While at the Lakelse
‘Hotel he gave some thought to
‘the fast food business.
It was with hotels in mind that
he ‘started to make ‘smokies’,
‘Ideas for a meat business grew
‘from ‘there, and ‘at one time -K &
K Meats ‘supplied up to 20 corner
stores, =
As demand grew, Ken left the
‘hotel job and developed a
ccuslomized meat business.
It was a slow start,”’ says Ken,
In? ‘1983, three years into the
business, he and his wife got a
call from Margo. Hayes (one of
the organizers of the first Farmers
Market). She asked Ken if he’d
like to be a part of the Farmers
“Market.
‘Ken had been selling at the
-weigh scale, but at that time the
Department of Highways put a
‘stop to.it, So joining the Farmers
Market seemed like.a good idea.
Ken finds the Farmers Market
nm’ excellent way to make
‘customer contacts. His product
‘has grown to include smokics,
beef jerky, three kinds of salami,
‘Kielbasa, pepperoni, and break-
fas sausages.
The custom orders are for
moose _ sausage, cured hams,
bacon and: ‘turkeys. ,
“Wild game makes excellent
sausage,” says Ken.

Ken keeps reminding himself
that he is suppose to be retired,
but he is much too busy. ;

‘Ken’s wife Kathie is the other
*K’ in K & K Meats: Kathie came

‘to: Terrace in 1952 with her

parents Ida & Henry. Scheper.
They came from St. Pauls, Al-
berta, and had a family of 14 chil-
dren.

Ken and Kathie have six chil-
dren of their own, ranging in ages
from - 26-36. One lives ‘in
Enderby, the rest of the children
live here in town.

Kathie doesn’t work at the
Farmers Market very often, but
her sister Marg Brink is usually
there every weekend, working the
booth next to Ken. Since she also
helps outat K & K Meats, people
are often confused about which
Scheper girt Ken is married to. .

The real Mrs. Bruce is at home
looking after their home business.

Skeena Valley Farmers Market
every Saturday morning..
