| Alookat - the abstract Edward Epp is a Terrace artist and an organizer with the Ter- race Art Association. By EDWARD EPP To remind myself of the chal- lenge creating good. abstract art poses, I attempted to paint one for the current exhibition on display at the Terrace Art Gallery. Having not painted a pure ab- stract since 1988, I struggted through a week of failures before coming up with oneI liked. Abstract -art’s subtletics and complexities were reinforced for me aiew. : : Jn fact, I think that an artist creating strong abstract pictures is on the same competency level as a skied surgeon performing a difficult. operation, or a lawyer running a complex defence trial. Abstract art in the history of pictorial art is very new — a 20th century phenomenon. Wassily Kandinsky, a Russian- born. artist, is considered the ‘father? of modem art and the fa- ther of pure abstract painting. _ Barly abstract painting’ was motivated by spiritual reasons. Kandinsky wrote . about the motivating force of spirituality in his treatise “The Spirituality in. Art’. He felt that pure colours, patterns and forms could create sympathetic response in the soul of the viewer. New York crilic Hilton Kramer wrote: about an exhibition of Kandinsky’s in 1981: “*What is aspired to in this artis. fundamental rejection of the material universe. What is ycamed for is some heavenly or Utopian existence elsewhere — an existence that abstract. painting is ‘envisioned as phrophesizing and abetting. This is not the way we have come to think of abstract art in-our own time, but there can be no question that the whole — esthetic of early abstraction was inexplicably bound to these ques- tions of religious doctrine and Utopian ideclogy.”’ Whether the paintings shown in thie local gallery aspire to a trans- cendent. place, I. will Iet the audience surmise. Nevertheless, the mere fact that at least four-serious local artists . continue to’ attempt to express themselves in this difficult me- dium ‘is itself remarkable. Tangible support for such efforts, almost anywhere, is quite limited, to say the least. . Artists included in the exhibi- tion are -Peter Dickson, Alan Soutar, Joanne Thomson and Ed- ward Epp. There is also one picce by Calgary’s Errol Lee Fullon, The artists take a range of dif- ferent approaches: Dickson paints large colourful stained canvasses; Soutar paints. and arranges modules .of paper; Thomson makes small and intimate coloured watercolours; Epp uses acrylic gel to build up colourcd shapes. and contrasts these with washes of varied hues. The small panel by Fullon ex- ploits the new colour potential of acrylic interference paint. The blending of the various art- ists’ pictures in this space creates a preseniation, at the very least, exciting to the cye. ; Hopefully this exhibition will provide visual challenges and - stimulus to the viewing public. For the artist, this show should give support and recognition to those ‘isolated individuals work- ing in this media. For those who would: aspire to expand their aesthetic horizons, this work should give ther heait to do so. ‘The abstract painters’ exhibi- tion opens Friday at the Terrace Art Gallery is on display until Nov, 1. Hours noon to 3 p.m, and 7-9 p.m., Tuesday to Saturday. ep BBO 2B ‘ IMPROVING Terrace, B.C...
