Page 6, The Herald, Tuesday, Oclober 74. 1974 14 karate students graded A sport normally unthought of by the general public has been quietly growing in the Terrace area over the past ar or so, Joe Vienneau’s ate studio at 3316 Clark St. in Thornhill had just 9 kids registered a year ago, and is now teaching 28 kids and a good number, of adults the ‘wado-ryv’ style of rate. Vienneau took over the Terrace Karate Club a year ago when their black belt instructor moved to Prince George, Since he was . holding the sessions in his Yellowhead Hay and Grain dicided to rename the club the Yellowhead Karate Club. Vienneau himself took up karate about six years ago, and holds a Green Belt. Last Thursday, Jim Hamilton of Prince George, a Black Belt karate in- structor, paid the Yellowhead Karate Club a visit on his way through town, and as a result several ef Vienneau's students had an opportunity to be graded in the Wado-Ryu style of karate. Adult karate students begin their grading with 8Q, ard class. After working their way 8Q 2nd and Ist 7Q 3rd class, 2nd class, Ist class, 6Q 3rd class, 2nd class, etc, Atotal of 5 adults received grading from Hamilton. Receiving their 2Q Ird class grading were Robert Wright, and Reme Vienneau, and receiving §q 2nd class grading were John Lathan, George Billson, and Len Brown. Children up to 14 years of age are graded on a slightly different system. They begin with the 1st ‘MON’, 3rd class, and work their way up to 3rd MON 1st class until they reach 13-14 years of age, then progress to the adult these young Karate students were given a grading by Hamilton while he was here. Receiving their ist MON 3rd class ratings were David Essay, David Haits, Stella Mendes, Elizabeth Mendes, Norman Mercure, and Lenny Webber. Receiving their ist MON 2nd class grading were Josian Cam, and Steven Gregg, who has only bean in the Club for 114 months, and according to Vienmeau has quite a lot of potential. Last, but not least, Sylvie Mercure received her Ist MON, 1st class grading. Sylvie is only 11 years old, and is Vienneau’s top Store on Clark Road, he system of grading. Scores were high throughout the leagues this past week and it all started out with the mens league having the high single of 329 rolled by Ernie Hidber. Ernie ended with a 761 triple for a good night of bowling. Ernie also holds the high average for that league of 223. Team highs went to the Kalum Kab Strikers who bowled a 1239 single and finished with a 3257 triple. Tuesday Coffee had the ladie's highs going to Marg Mumford who bowled a 281 single and finished with a triple total of 661. Team highs went to the Donkey Five with a 957 single and 2565 triple total. Mens high single went to Cliff Wilkinson who rolled a 338 single while George Haugland took high triple by finishing with a 751. Team highs went to the Lumber Kings with a 1222 single and 3096 triple. League leaders are Ocean Breeze with 43 points followed by Lumber Kings with 4 and Caravan with 31 points. High point of the week came on Friday Mixed League. Jim Granger had nine frames with strikes and was looking at a perfect game when he punched out a head pin and finished up the game with a total of 384. To say the least that cne game would make anyone's night a complete success but Jim finish the night with a sé2 triple total. That constituted a lot of good bowling. Ladies highs went to Gilda Edgar with a 263 single and 637 triple. Team highs went to the team of the Good Bad and the Ugly who bowled a 114 single and ended with a 2919 triple. Team leaders are the Funny Five with 42 points followed by the 4077 Lions leading with 24 points. Girl's high single went to Gail Deinstadt with a 164 while Kris Fairless rolled a 250 for high double. Boy’s high singie went to Steven DeWacht with a 139 while Rene Mailloux took high double with a 259 total. Karla Lindstrom took girl's highs in the Bantam League with a 135 single and 379 triple. Boy's highs went to Shane Kulba with a 154 single and 426 triple. Juniors have the Phan- toms leading with 24 points along with the Cougars. Girl's high single went to Laurel Thomsen with a 143 while Sheryl Tetrault took high triple by rolling a 378. Bouy’s highs went to Terry Beard with a 240 single and 564 triple. Y.B.C, Majors had girl's high single going to Sherry Renney with a 259 while Jeanne Bentham took high triple by finishing with a 675. Men's highs went to Adrian Mumford with a 283 single and 776 triple. There was a Masters Tournament held in the Terrace Lanes on Sunday and the following are the final results. From our sub- region which includes Kitimat, Terrace, Smithers, Houston and Prince Rupert, top man of our sub-region is Henry Tremblay of Kitimat who over elght bowled +185 pins over average. Foliowing Henry was Huck Wilcox of Terrace who was +92 over average. Top lady of the sub- region was Dorothy Alway who bowled a plus 124 pins over average, followed by Collette Newman with +94 and Darlene Frank + 84 and on celled that e , Marlis Masch from Kitimat ‘ “pnd had a 234 ‘and @ 244 to”” with’a +65; The other three ladies were ‘all from Terrace.
