(Con't from page 2)" have to be upgraded as would access roads to north. - there would have tobe an upturn in the world market conditions so that any operation undertaken in the area would be viable as well as profitable. - not only would Terrace, . as a community, have to pull together from within but there would have to be a unified voice of all northern communities. An eight-year timetable for mineral development in this area could read as follows: ‘ 1978-81 The first stage of the Kitimat Aluminum Smelter expansion could take place as well as the development of the lead-zinc deposils at Robb Lake and Sumitt Lake. This would necessitate the construction of a lead plant in this area with a capacity to produce §5,000 Lons a year. 1991-83 More mines will open in the north and the construction of a zine plant could be expected to com- mence in thearea. In ad- dition to the construction of this plant, the second phase of the Kitimat Aluminum Smelter should proceed. During this time period, the lead plant could be enlarged as more mines open up. . 1983-85 In additon to more . mines becoming operational, a 100,000 ton copper smelter will open anda 6.5 mill. kg-yr molybdenum roaster will commence operation. A further expansion of the Kitimat Aluminum Smelter The World's Finest Central Heating Fireplace { The Angcaname ©... THE Freyh aie - by 101,000 tons could com- mence. WOOD FOR FUEL The primary use of wood herehas been for lumber and pulp. Wood has many uses and one of the least known is for the manufacturing of a fuel substitute for gasoline. Methanol has been used successfully as a fuel for the internal combustion engine and for the home heating furnace. The fuel alcohols are cleaner burning and “have five times lower emissions than do the hydrocarbon fuels. Thus they easily fall below the now acceptable levels of pollution. They allow motors ‘to operate with a higher compression ration thus simpler pollution controls. They have a higher heat transfer ratio thus necessitating some _ modifications to internal «ombustion engines. Fresh Air Fireplace However, it is estimated that it would cost the average car owner about $100 to convert a car to use methanol fuels. In the past it was used as a fuel for racing cars and during the second world war a3 a substitute for gasoline- Perhaps this is one of the industries which could be established in the Terrace area. With the price of gaoline increasing to the world price per barrel and with out hydrocarbon fuels being exhausted, it could be an alternative to the energy situation which we may face. A pilot project is being undertaken in Ontario to study the feasibility of sucha gas substitute and with help from both levels of govern- ment such an operation could be established in this area in conjunction with an already existing sawmill.
