PAGE 2, THE HERALO, 2,4-D could cause problems PENTICTON, B.C. (CP) — Phenoxy herbicides like 24D open iriead ofn- malformations and possibly incredse the prevelance of cancer, a Simon Fraser Piday, June 9, 1978 programs, sald that evi- dence bf the harmful effects of herbicides such as 2,¢-D is . “fragmentary, poorly- organized, confusing: and some of it misleading.” University biologist said ye said, however, that the Wednesday. Dr. Theodor Sterling made the comment during a hearing by ‘the British Columbia pesticide control appeal board into the use of 2,4-D in the Okanagan Lake syatem. Sterling was one of two witnesses presented by the South Okanagan Eviron- mental Coalition, which oppofes use of the herbicide, The other, environmental engineer Gil of Seattle, said it is difficult to measure the adverse effects of 24D because adequate studies have not been carried out on low-level concentrations of 2,4,5-T and 2,4D, The seven-member appeal board, headed by Valter Raudsepp, former deputy: minister of water resources and former chairman of the provincial pollution control board, is considering whether 2,4-D should be used in the Okanagan water syatem this summer to fight Eurasian milfoll weed. EVIDENCE CONFUSING Sterling, of Simon Fraser's computer science -depart- . ment, and a biologist with a background in cancer- related studies and evidence as a whole in- dicates use of phenoxy herbicides like 24-D opens risks ofnmalformations among people and wildlife, and possibly increases the prevelance of cancer, Sterling suggested mechanical harvesting as an alternative to herbicide to get rid of the milfoil, He said that a secondary industry to dispoge of milfoil also would ' alleviate labor problems in the Okanagan Valley. Zemansky, who is working on .doctorate en- vironmental engineering at the University of Washington; described a similar issue which arose over milfoil in Lake Washington. PUBLIC CONCERN - Although it firat was decided tonuse 2,4-D, be said, because of public concern concern over possible health hazards in- volved, it was decided that 2,4-D would only be used in Seattle under strict lab conditions and mechanical means would have to be used in the lake. - Zemansky and.- board members asked Dr. Peter Nevwroth, a biologist with the _ provincial water in- vestigations branch, for specific information con- cerning drift activity in the Okanagan Lake system and what effect this action will have on dispersal of the chemical, Newroth said he has the needed information but that it would pe supplied at a later tim Referring ta the 1976 studies done by Newrath on 2,4-D and milfoil, Zemansky sald he tried for ‘several Months by telephone and mail to abtaln further input and data but was unable to ; get the material, APPEARS INADEQUATE “If the information is not readily available, it would appear that papers and studies completed to date not adequate,’' Zemansky said. He also said that there are a number of groups whe want to see a return of the milfoil in Cheshpeake Bay,’ Va. Although the plant was once prolific in the Virginia coastal bay, it has rereated greatly in recent years along with other acquatic plant life, he said. The United States Environmental Protection Agency, fish and wildlife agencies and the University of Virginia are _ among those who would like to see this plant and others _Teintroduced to gceve a natural balance of species in the acquatic plant families of. the bay. The hearing continues, PCB pushes Cominco to clean-up effluent KIMBERLEY, ‘B.C. (CP) — The: pollution control board will decide within six weeks whether the deadline will be extended for Cominco Ltd. to complete an ‘effluent treatment plant atits mining ‘and fertilizer operation in this southeastern British Columbia community, a company spokesman said Wednesday. The decision followed a daylong bearing before the board. ‘The ‘board charged Cominco earlier this year with failing to meet Pollution control standards, The board had ordered the company tocompletea list of improvements by Dec. ‘31, 1977, The company was ordered to remove contamindnts from its fertilizer plant, treat and drainage water at Sullivan mines, treat water from a tillings pond and storage area near the fertilizer plant and dispose of the remaining domestic sewage from the fertilizer plant. The board earlier turned down an application by Com- - inco to have the order amended to give them more time to build an effluent plant, scheduled for com- pletion innlate 1979. Tests showed pollution from the mining operation ‘was entering Mark Creek and the St. Mary's River.
