Since the inception of these ’ two plans, workers in any or- ganized Coast operation, large or small, have the full pro- tection of the Health and Welfare benefits with eligi- bility, portability and layoff coverage identical from one operation to another. One of the good features of these plans is that the un- ion now has equal right with management in the applica- tion and administration of the plan. Gone is the fine print that permits an individual employer at his discretion to allow or disallow benefits. Every woodworker on the Coast is now entitled to the full benefits’ as provided under the text of the plans. Any reserve funds are now the property of the partici-. pants in the plans. Other alterna- tives are now being considered by the appeals commit- tee, some of which will be put before the subscribers AU ue unusual amount of death claims. There were 110 deaths in the industry during the fis- cal year, which is running higher than anticipated. The trustees have not had an op- portunity of carefully check- ing out the cause of deaths; however, a factor involved is the average age of employ- ees in the industry, where under seniority provisions, with a tendency to cut down by automation and mechan- ization, we find the average age of persons covered stead- ily rising. The trustees have not had an opportunity of checking fatalities due to industrial ac- cidents; however, indications are that they are compar- able to previous years. - Crown Life Insurance Com- pany during the fiscal year received premiums in the amount of $1,296,490. An audit by chartered ac- countants of income and ex- penditures of the Plans will soon be made, and copies of the audit will be made avail- able to Local Unions as soon as they are received. The trusteees have renew- ed the policy with Crown Life for another year. Con- tributions by participants will not be increased during the ensuing fiscal year.
