g§UCCESS of the 1957 Pacific Tribune fin- ancial. drive depends on the amount of work done by our supporters in the next two weeks and particularly on the efforts made by press clubs in a number of Vancouver Island, Fraser Valley and Interior centres, With close to $11,000 of our $18,000 target turned in, Greater Vancouver press clubs have reached about 75 percent of their objective while provincial press clubs are just past the 40 percent mark. A heavy responsibility rests on several big provincial centres — New Westminster, Nanaimo, Victoria, Port Alberni — to guar- antee the continued publication of the paper. The average retail price of a four- door sedan in 1955 was $2,192, compared with $914, 20 years ago. The report went on to pic- ture a “banner future” for the automobile, seeing $1.5 billion or more put into expansion of production, and the car popu- lation almost tripling in the next 25 years. Also, it warned that indepen- dent producers may become extinct in the next 25 years unless they receive major sup- port. This would leave Ford, General Motors and Chrysler with a complete monopoly on production of autos in Canada. Washington gag law out OLYMPIA The anti-Communist party oath law adopted by Washing- ton state legislature in 1955 has been declared unconstitutional by Judge Charles T. Wright of the Thurston County Su- perior Court. : The case is expected to go to the State Supreme Court for a final decision. : Judge-, Wright ruled on a case brought by Howard L. Nostrand and Max Savelle, University of Washington pro- fessors, and supported by the Civil Liberties Union. The law required all public employes to sign an affidavit that they are not members of the Com- munist party or members of any organization on the U.S. attorney general’s ‘subversive” list. Judge Wright ruled the law illegally designates state leg- islative authority ‘to the U.S. attorney general. Not affected by the ruling was the 1951 law which makes it illegal to be- long to an organization advo- cating overthrow of the goy- ernment by force. ‘ MAY 17, 1957 — PACIFIC TRIBUNE—PAGE 15 & — — : cnr I ee COE A a Ne
