All city aldermen have been invited to attend the rally - and indications are that a _ humber have accepted The program Saturday calls for a march to start at 11 a.m. from 4th and Oak and will ‘Proceed to City Hall for the rally. The Vancouver Tenants Council which is sponsoring the action, have distributed close to 20,000 leaflets containing the Council's 18-point Charter. The Tenants Council takes the stand that regardless of what action Victoria may or may not take, the City Council has the authority to enact a Tenants Charter establishing controls over rents and conditions in apartment blocks. “This right was given to city councils by the provincial government after the war and we intend to see to it that the City uses it,”’ said Bruce Yorke, secretary of the tenants organ- ization, this week. Other large cities such as Ottawa and Winnipeg have considered similar legislation. The Charter which the city is being urged to adopt would set up a three member Rental Appeal Board to exercise some control over runaway rents. It would also set up a number of rules which would uphold the rights of tenants and eliminate landlord abuses now prevalent throughout the city. The Vancouver Tenants Council has spurred the organiza- tion of tenants in Vancouver and and has attracted national attention in its fight. VOL. 30, NO. 13 Tribune al een ‘Pentagon considers Canada expendable’ President Richard Nixon’s decision to establish the ABM system close to Canada’s borders means that the Pentagon considers Canada and its people expendable and is prepared to defend the U.S. to the last Canadian. This was the charge made by William Kashtan, national leader of the Communist Party, in a statement which hit out strongly against the U.S. president's action which ignored widespread protest among the American people against the anti-missile missile system. The text of Kashtan’'s statement said: ‘President Nixon's decision to go ahead with the installation of an anti-ballistic missile system is a blow against nuclear disarmament It opens up prospects of a nuclear arms race which in the end could undermine world peace and threaten the very survival of Canada “The ABM’ system estab- lished close to Canada’s borders means only one thing - that the Pentagon considers Canada and its people expendable and is prepared to defend the USA to the last Canadian. “Once again the sovereignty of our country is threatened by the United States rulers. with complete contempt. “Canadians should not only demand that the ABM system be moved away from our borders. They should equally insist that the entire ABM system be scrapped and that genuine mea- sures be taken by the USS. Government to begin the process of nuclear disarm- ament. This is what the Soviet Union has been pressing for. This is what Canada should press for.
