Carried, TN/13/85/05/ 13/29 Moved by Alderman Laking: seconded by Alderman Stewart: WHEREAS A Commuter Rai | service from Port Coquitlam to Vancouver along the existing C.P.Rail tracks has been proposed and under consideration for at least five years; AND WHEREAS Counci| believes that such a service would alleviate rush hour congestion in Port Coquitliam, Port Moody, Coquittam, Burnaby and Vancouver, and, in addition facilitate deferral of major highways expenditures by the Provincial Government, and furthermore improve the efficiency of the bus system; | AND WHEREAS The major obstacles to such a service have been stated by the Provincial Government and B.C. Transit to be the capital cost and the difficulty of negotiating a shared use of the track and C.P. Rail; AND WHEREAS The Federal Government has recently indicated Willingness to negotiations with the Provincial Government with a view to removing said obstacles;, | incentive to participate In this project will be greatly reduced if the service cannot be implemented during Expo '86; . THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that Counci | Petition the Minister responsible for Transit, the Honourable Grace McCarthy, to invite the Federal Government to commence negotiations regarding capital cost sharing and C.P, Rail track usage, with a view to Implementing the Commuter Rail Service in time for Expo '86.
