Mabbett, December 12th, 1975, drawing attention j violations, etc. Sign & Fire to the fact that some civic employees were harassed by campaigners and Reg.B/laws also the R.C.M.P. in removing pre-election campaign signs from illegal locations, and noting therein that this past few weeks has seen two By- laws allowed to be violated; namely, the one concerning burning and now the Sign By-law. In speaking to the report, Mayor Campbell advised that he had instructed the By-law Officer not to remove the pre-election signs as the City was accused of being Communists and anti-N.D.P.; also, to be fair, signs would have to be removed from every street in the City. Alderman Traboulay advised that on the day of the election, he had noted signs on Patricia Avenue from one end to the other about a foot apart, and he stated he thought this was flaunting the By-law. Alderman Ranger suggested that the signs could be removed and impounded in the City Yards and Alderman Traboulay agreed, stating he felt the Administrator should be directed to amend the By-law to allow for the confiscation and impounding of such signs; however, Alderman Mabbett stated he felt that the By-law should be amended to provide for specific times to post pre- election signs on Municipal property and Mayor Campbell suggested that the matter be dealt with by the appropriate Committee Chairman early in the new year.
