C2 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, February 13, 2002 Red charges ahead in hunt for top spot By TYLER NOBLE AS THE regular season nears its end in the Midget House Hockey league, Team Red is making quile a charge in the hunt for top spot. Entering Week 17, Red was tied with Team Blue for second place at 30 points, only six behind White. Red picked up two wins in Week 16 and looked to do the same this week. The week’s opener saw Blue take on Team White. In the game, a Team Blue goaltending experiment was far from successful. Blue got wiped by White in a 16-7 decision.” The score aside, there was one interesting goal late in the opening frame. With time winding down, Ken Eyjolfson shot the puck high above the net_and it.looked.like. nothing . would happen. But the puck: bounced off the glass, rebounded to the goaltender’s. back and with only one second left, the puck crossed Blue’s goal line. It “made. the score 6-1. after the opening period, and summed up the type of game this was. a The next night, Blue returned to the ice fa- cing Red. They looked to bounce back from their prior loss while Red tried to keep up to White in the standings. In the game’s opening minute Red was on the board as Jon Hidber wired a slap shot from the slot. They went up 3-0 after goals from Jack Haworth and Jon Sarsiat at the 12:14 and 10:24 marks. Team Blue finally responded with five minutes left when Brian Todd set up Branden Green for his 18th goal of the season. At 11:26 of the second, Team Red kept the ball rolling with goal:from Shawn Barg at 11:26. With the score now 4-1, Blue worked to get back in the game. At 10:57, Chris Schlenker scored pulling the score at 4-2 and with 2:12 left in the middle frame, Eric Eide narrowed the gap to only one with a goal al . That’s as close as Blue would come. Red’s Jack Haworth added in the third, .while Sean Casper picked up a pair, as Team Red went on to win thi§ one 7-3. With-the win, Red moved into sale posses- . sion of. second place, ‘six. points ‘back of White. Red had a chance to pet to within four points if they could beat While in the Thurs- day night match-up. In the final game of the week, Red got out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of goals from Sean Mahoney. White got on’ the board at 13:21 of the second when Nathen MacNamara wired a slap shot from the right wing past the Red ‘goaltender. White tied it up at 12:19 when Tysen Leblond picked up his league-leading 43rd goal of the season. But Red went ahead atthe 3:42 mark on a goal from Sean Casper. Entering the third, Red was up 3-2. Team Red added another in the third and _was able to. keep White off the scoreboard the rest of the way. The game stayed ‘close throughout, but Red came out on top with a 4- 2 final.
