New Homes Benefit from Wallcoverings Moving into a new house, apar tment or condominium je exciting and also a challenge when it comes to decorallng. Below ure some of the more typical questions asked of decorators today and answered by. Mary Prud'homme, Design and Color Consultant for Sun- worthy Wallcoverings. @ The rooms in our townhouse are quite small and boxy and we're won- dering if there are any decoraling (ricks that will help make them seem farger? A. Light colored walleoverings in open pat: terna tend Lo prov wea sense of depth and expand a room, Mini-prints ona light ground also have the same effect. Stripes or vertical patterns that stretch upwards and outwards, such a8 tree or follage designs, make celings appear higher, whereas horizontal patterns have the effect of stretching ‘walla. @ We have a small bathroom in our new con- dominium and wonder how we can make it look both attractive and possibly more spacious? A. One of the tricks decorators use in bathrooms (and other rooms) these days is to cover the walls, and quite often the ceilings, with a foil or mylar walleovering. There are some exciting patterns available and mylar, in particular, has = very reflectlye qualities and, therefore, will appeur to make a room lovk bigger. 4. We like al! the con- veniences of living ina new house, but miss the ‘character’ thal older houses seem lo have. Can you suggest any way to solve this problem with decorating? A. Wallcoverings can certainly help here, One idea making a comebuck today is to use co-ordinated wallcoverings to make a dado and chair rail, which is very effeclive in u dining room, kitchen or even living room. Usually a texture or striped pattern is used for the dado with a co-ordinating pattern on the upper wall. * The chair rail can either be made from a simple strip of moulding or, casier still, where a striped walleovering is used, just cut ulf a stripe and use it horizontally lo form the chair rail. 4p. We are moving inlo a new house soon and would like to paper some af the rooms, Is this difficult ta do ourselves? A. The pretrimmed and pre-pasted walicoverings availabie today make the jab of hanging willeoverings oneself quile a simple task. The new walls should first be primed with an oil-based paint, Very lille equipment is needed to hang the walleoverings and full in- structions are generuily included with cach ro of walicovering.
