Soviets here Nov. 8

A Soviet expert on Canadian affairs
will help local residents mark the 70th
anniversary of the Russian Revolution
with a gala event in Vancouver Nov. 8.

Dr. Leon Bagramov, who heads the
Canadian department of the Institute
of the USA and Canada — a branch of
the USSR’s Academy of Sciences
— will be the keynote speaker during
the celebrations at the Queen Elizabeth
Playhouse.

Soviet artists, including Moscow
Opera soloist Vladimir Matorin and
bayanist — Ukrainian harpist — Alex-
ander Katenin will round out the pro-
gram which begins at 7:30 p.m.

Letters

An informal reception in the play-
house foyer is open to everyone follow-
ing the event. Several representatives of
the Vancouver community have been
invited.

Bagramov, who visited Vancouver
and met with officials in other Cana-
dian cities last April, will also address
classes at Simon Fraser University, the
University of B.C. and Langara Cam-
pus of the Vancouver Community Col-
lege.

Tickets cost $8 up to Oct. 31 and $10
after that date. To purchase tickets
phone 872-1524, 253-6442 or 251-1186.

What of Canadians’ rights?

Karl Ettinger, Port Alberni, writes: On
Oct. 8, CBC Radio News carried a report on
Canadian Labour Congress president Shir-
ley Carr’s visit to the Soviet Union and her
meeting with Mikhail Gorbachev.

The report informed us that Carr

expressed grave concern on the issue of
human rights violations in the USSR and
that she went on to emphasize to the Soviet
leader that Canadian labour’s attitudes to
the Soviet Union would be based on their
progress, or lack of it, in that field. President
Carr said she was equally concerned about
the future of Soviet workers.

Directly following this news item came
the report on the federal government's

’ back-to-work legislation to end the postal

strike, which even at that early stage, was
received as exactly what it was, a vicious and
calculated attack on our postal workers.

I would suggest that Carr’s “grave con-
cern” about human rights in the USSR, is at
best, misplaced, and I am confident that any
postal worker would readily concur with
that conclusion. I would further suggest
that the interests of Canadian labour would
be better served if Carr would abandon this
intense preoccupation with moth-eaten
cold-war stereotypes.

I am equally certain that Carr’s worries
about the Soviet workers future are, of
themselves, a total waste, and I would offer
that the future of the Soviet workers is con-
siderably brighter than that of their Cana-
dian counterparts.
