In a statement submitted to the Berger commission April 21, the. B.C. Peace Council asserted that the Canadian government must not allow the building of the Mackenzie pipeline before first negotiating the land claims of the native people. The statement declares that if the present plan is carried out large scale development would almost certainly follow, depriving the native people by destroying their means of livelihood. The Council maintains that once negotiated the native people should be allowed to determine their own future in a democratic way. It concludes, ‘‘Therefore in the interest of peace based on justice we urge that the native people’s land claims be negotiated now, and that the development of the Mackenzie Delta gas be delayed until the gas can be developed in a way that is satisfactory and beneficial to the northern people.” Hearings regarding the Mackenzie pipeline issue will be held in Vancouver May 10, 11 and Best Wishes the land claims have been 12 at the Hyatt Regency.
