Strength of support from the floor of the convention for the strike proposal came as a sur- prise to the union’s own lead- ers. Previously, President Rudy Usick had predicted. that the resolution would be abandon- ed as “to radical.”’ After its passage he said the directors would take a “close look” to see how the strike could be implemented. SASKATOON — The Sask- atchewan Farmers Union meeting here strongly reaff- irmed its demand for defic- iency payments to make up “the difference between the price actually received in mar- ket by a farmer and the parity price.” Delegates resolved that if a decision on this question is not forthcoming or is unfavorable, “western farmers be mobiliz- ed for further action.” There was in evidence at the SFU convention a new ris- ing current of criticism against the Diefenbaker gov- ernment. It was so marked that Northern Affairs Minister Alvin Hamilton complained to the delegates that ‘‘there has been a systematic and deliber- ate program of propaganda in the province which seeks to create the impression that no- thing has been done for agri- culture by the present federal government.” Delegates proceeded to adopt an angry resolution on the new attacks coming up on the Crows Nest Pass Agreement under which grains move to export market with ‘relatively low freight rates.
