The inspection by Transport Canada of Hawkair Aviation Ser- vices Lid.’s ground facilities and records should lead to an opera- tions certificate. shortly, says company spokesman Dave Men- zies. Hawkair wants to be Flying at least one of two Bristol Freighters transport aircraft by August, “We've already got a fair bit of interest from the mining industry lo put us to work,’” said Menzies. The Bristols once belonged to Trans Provincial Airlines until it went into bankruptcy last year. Trans Provincial had three Bristols which then ended up in the hands of a British company. Hawkair is buying one of the Bristols, leasing another and is getting ready the third so it can be flown to England by its owner confpany. Hawkair pilots Menzies and Rod Hayword flew the Bristols i i H zi i i HAWKAIR ENGINEER Paul Hawkins checks out Bristol Freighter that company hopes to soon have flying freight to and from northern mining operations. The Bristol is one of two such aircraft Hawkair anticipates on putting into service. for Trans Provincial and spent last week becoming familiar once again with the aircraft. Regulalions require that pilots be checked oul on aircraft they fly every six months. Tt makes for an interesting cir- cumstance, says Menzies, be- cause the checking is supposed to be done by a pilot currently flying the aircraft, These Bristols are believed to be the last three cones operational in the world and they haven’t flown by Menzies and Hayword since early 1993. That means the two pilots are probably the most ‘familiar with the aircraft in the world and so are checking themselves out. Anticipated flight operations mark the beginning of what Haw- kair secs as a regular business servicing mining and other com- panies in the north. The company already services other aircraft and has a smailer aircraft leased for flying lessons. Hayword and. Menzies are part- ners with Paul Hawkins and Don Vienneau in the company. THE TERRACE-KITIMAT air- port and one of its employces have won energy efficiency awards. The airport’s award came from B.C. Hydro’s PowerSmart pra- giam for being the most energy efficient airport in B.C. while Dave Barry received an award from Transport Canada. Barry’s award ‘recognizes the work he did, particularly with the iort’s terminal expansion, in eel Oh te OC nee Soe elping cul down energy use. Barry estimales that energy savings measures have reduced the airport's electrical consump- tion by 7.1 per cent. The terminal building itself, says Barry, represents a savings of 19,000 kilowatt hours a year. That's enough to run three and half average homes provided they ate heated by natural gas. wk KKK Loggers from around the pro- vince are making plans to attend Rendezvous 94 in Chilliwack.
