A12- The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, August 23, 2000 Residents urged to safequard their garbage Officers track nuisance bears TWO NUISANCE bears were being tracked by Ter- race conservation officers last week in the city’s southside. The two black -bears, described as targe by. lo- cals, were getting into re- sidents’ garbage at night. Conservation officers fear that as berries and fruit ripen and fall to the ground, the bears might continue to -pester . the. neighbourhood. One trap — sel up in a residence near Skeena St. ~ was put in Aug. 16, while another one near Graham Ave, has been up for several weeks. The traps take only 10 minutes to set up and only need a few chicken scraps or whatever else conserva- tion officers can get a hold of, A bag of food is hung inside the trap and when the bear goes for it and pulls it, the door swings shut, and the bear is trap- ped inside. Unfortunately, says conservation officer Bob Butcher, the bear is then destroyed. “Everybody who gets upset about the bear dying should: look at their own garbage,” he said, alluding to that fact that many people leave garbage out- side at night in containers that aren’t bear-proof. Butcher says that, as of late last week, his office hasn't received any new oe, THIS tS the bear trap on the southside that Conservation Officer Bob Butcher (left) set up last week in the wake of numerous reports of nuisance bears. But: cher says that people need to be more aware of how and where their garbage is stored, if bears’ lives are to be spared. 5043 Keith Avenue, Terrace Ballet, Jazz and Modern Dance Classes for Pre-school > Adult Begginer -» Advanced Leah Correia/Artistic Director Cpen House & Registration Sat., Aug. 26th Sun., Aug. 27th Thurs,, Aug. 31st 9 am- 3pm 12 pm - 4 pm ] pm-7 pm complaints about the bears in the past few days, which could mean one of three things. “It’s either taking a break, it’s moved on, or it’s been killed,” he said. Butcher doubts the tat- ter, since no unusual gun- shots have been reported to him, “A lot of cases where the bear is shot we don’t hear about it,” he said. “Most of those are probab- ly not here in Terrace, where people would hear the shots though.” Butcher said that any person who shoots wildlife in defence of their property or person is required to im- mediately report the inci- dent to conservation offi- cers. “People [in rural areas] have to expect to live with the bears,” said Butcher. “If we suspect for some reason that the bear was shot without due cause, we'll bring the person in and talk to them about it.” Three bear traps are available to conservation officers here.
