Author enlivens Children’s ‘Book Week with readings — by Betty Barton In celebration of Children's Book Week, children’s author Rachna Gilmore entertained Grade 3 students from Veritas, Parkside and E.T. Kenney schools Nov. 4. Canada Council sponsored her tour. The children were spellbound by her descrip- tions of the writing process and by readings from three of her four published children’s books. © She explained that she was about 30 years old when she - finally decided to become an author, She had small children herself and read a lot to them. She likes writing because she loves reading so much. She said. it was easy to get writing ideas from Hstening to and watching her children. She writes. about what children are interested in. . At the request:of the students, Gilmore. read Aunt Fred is a Witch, My Mother is Weird and Jane’s Loud Mouth (an audience participation book), all books that exaggerate real life, and with which many of the students were already familiar. The books have been translated into Danish, French and Spanish. _ Gilmore asked the children —. | what they thought made a story signalled the beginning of the good. They replied, "grammat “words".. and punctuation... illustrations... and quotations". Gilmore added to the list,."Does the story feel ‘tight? Does it have a‘ catchy beginning? Is there a problem to be solved? Is the character inter- esting and the right age?"
