(eet eee ae al a a rc i oe 16 Terrace Review — Wednesday, August 26, 1987 PCB pump warning repeated The Ministry of Environment and Parks has repeated the re- cent caution about certain models of submersible water pumps which may contain poly- chlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), On July 2, the Ministry warn- ed B.C. residents using submer- sible pumps in private wells that some pumps manufactured -be- tween 1964 and 1980 contain PCB-filled motors, or starting capacitors, which can leak into drinking water and create a potential health hazard. _ According to the Ministry, during the three weeks following _ the initial announcement on July 2, 805 B.C, residents contacted Ministry of Environment offices . and 40 pumps were turned in to the ministry. They added that all 23 well water samples tested by the ministry so far showed PCB levels below the three-parts-per- billion Canadian drinking water guideline. Tony Williams, 2 spokesman for the regional office of the Ministry of Environment in Prince George, said, ‘What we've got is the potential for some extremely low level con- tamination. It’s not an extreme hazard that we've discovered.’ However, the Chief Medical Officer for the Skeena Health Unit, Dr. David Bowering, warned that even though there was not yet a proven link be- tween PCBs and cancer, animal studies have shown that the | chemical is quite toxic and it was advisable to avoid any contact with it. “‘The main concern,” he said, “is that PCBs are very stable and don’t break down in nature. — It would be very prudent to avoid exposure.” | According to the Ministry of Environment, pumps which may contain PCBs include.
