It is interesting to me, Mr. Weeber, that when you reach for toilet paper you think of log- gers, but all comparisons aside, when are you, as a senior executive to the forest harvesting in- dustry, going to address the problems related to existing forest manage- ment? , As I sit writing this, it - is, for the pacific north- west, an unusually cloudless and sunny day for October, but the sky is not clear, there seems to be an awful lot of smoke in the air, con- sidering we live a long way away from the pollution of any large in- dustrial centers. I guess I’ve grown used to the occasional slash burn, but this year seems to be particularily bad for smoky days, though it probably keeps a few people employed when the fires get out of control and get into the good trees. I agree with you, Mr. Weeber, when you say you are guilty of being profit oriented, after all, that’s what free enter- Court | In Terrace Provincial Court on Friday, Oct. 3 Carmen Charbonneau was fined $400 for Operating a motor vehi- cle while her ability to drive was impaired. — Let’s consider some minor alterations — prise is all about, but it appears to me that forest harvesting in this part of the province is like a gold mine. Why go after the silver and copper when the gold brings in the big dollars? . When I drive north from Terrace to Aiyansh, I am disgusted. by the quantity of wood left on the ground at Latter Equal pay To the editor, Recently Mr. Dave Parker said that the Socred government was the first in Canada to legislate ‘‘equal pay for work of equal value’. The fact is in 1953, the Socréd government legislated ‘‘equal pay for equal work’’. Equal pay for equal work is simply a watered down version of what women and minority : groups have been fighting for ever since, “equal pay for work of equal value’. If Mr. Parker believes these two issues are the same, he is sadly mistaken and once again would seem to be show- ing us as a candidate of the Socred government, he doesn’t know the issues and concerns of women and minority groups in this province. You describe, Mr. Weeber, the results of logging depredation as being ‘‘stumps of course, then after a year or two green ground cover, and new trees and an ever- growing young forest’’ etc., etc. As I see it, the reality might go some- thing like this: Stumps first, of course, then complete incineration, then in a few years some. deciduous growth, then hopefully. some newly planted trees -or natural regeneration (at which time the ‘‘leave strips’’ can be cut out), then aerial fertilization (for strong growth of selected species), then herbicidal spraying (for the removel of unwanted species), then insecticidal spray programs (to keep these concentrated species alive), then presto! An even better forest than the one that was there before... Well, we hope SO anyway, as we haven’t got that far yet, and ac- tually, we're still just cutting the old ones down. So But seriously, Mr. Weeber, I wholehearted- ly agree with you in your desire to achieve a lifestyle dependent on the woods industry.
