When ground Is dry enough to get on to work, the ultimate

sod, yet not so fine that the frequent spring breezes will take

sometimes, on some soils, thay do tend to fluff up the ground -

and such a condition requires some packing befare seeding.

that time there Is not very much avallable nltregen In our
soils. Notice | sald ‘available’ nitregen, If your soil has
been well maintalned and managed, there will be nitrogen In
it, but it won‘t become avallable for a little while, The length
of time will depend upon the season and how long the. soil
takes to warm. During this relatively short perlod, young
seedlings may go short of needednitrogen. That is why It [sa
good ides fo work in a Iight application of a nitrogen fertilizer
with a rake when you prepare the seed bed. Such nitrogen is
Ina readily available form and gives young seedlings a real
boost during a period when they would otherwise falter. A

fertilizer mix known as 16-20-0 Is a good source because It |

also contains phosphate which helps fo grow a good husky
root system that will lead to development of husky young
plants. One or two pounds per thousand square. feet will do

the job.

Uniess you have done an extremely good job of cleaning
your sol? of weeds over the years, yau’il have weed seedIIngs
coming up bafore and after you seed. Needless td say, get rid
of those that come up before seeding. That's a lead pipe
cinch. Those that come up after you have done your seeding
can sometimes, make your planted rows hard to find. Yau
can make them easler to pick out though, If you mix a few
fast growing seeds Ilke iurnip, or radish, with your seeds, to

’ mark the rows. Then, once the markers are up, you can hoe

out the weeds between rows. Therrall you have to do Is hand
weed within the rows. Just as easy as taking candy from a

baby. Some baby!
