2 THE WESTERN CANADIAN LUMBER WORKER Scot te f iy ¥ : "CHANGED J STATUS” In order to demonstrate the changing status of the loggers and to stress the important role the - 1.W.A. membership plays in the economy of the province of British Columbia, the Regional Council actively participated in the planning of the Festival of Logging at this year’s P.N.E. and donated trophies for two of the seven events. Winners of trophies were: Harvey Livingstone ____-.--------_- Birling James Whittaker ______ Standing Block Chop Phil Whittaker _________ Obstacle Pole Bucking Dick Munro -_-..-- Speed Climbing Ghris: letziqe-: Ye Power Saw Bucking Hugh McKenzie ______--___--_----- Pole Falling Alan Woodrow __..._--- Axe Throwing Chris Arnet was declared “Champion Logger” and received the George Bell Memorial Trophy for his 28-point grand aggregate over the 14 days of the show while competing in pole climbing, pole bucking, power saw bucking and axe throwing. The forests form the backbone of the British Columbia economy and contribute most to the province’s income and employment. At present the province’s forest industries produce 69% of all lumber manufactured in Can- ada, 22% of all pulp, 14% of all paper, 79% of all the plywood and directly employ approximately 76,000 persons.
