MARGARET MISKELLY and Gayle Appleton were the
first grads from Terrace to receive their masters degrees
from UNBC, while being able to study and stay in Terrace.

Millesky and Appelton participated in a satellite program
that kept them in Terrace, but camed them their UNEC de-
Brees, Both received a Master of Community Health de-
gree,

Just over 450 students graduated from UNBC with the
annual Convocation Ceremony taking place May 28,

Appelton and Miskelly were two of 12 Terrace and arca
residents who received degrees at the ceremony,
~ Frank McMullen also received his Master of Social
Work degree at the ceremony.

The range of degrees handed out to Terrace students was
very diverse,

Terrace grads received degrees in the fields of forestry,

- biology, accounting, environmental Studies, geography and
commerce.

Kelli Stedham received a general BA, Margaret Vavela a
Bachelor of Commerce in accounting, Erik Hermes a
Bachelor of Commerce in accounting, Bryn White a
Bachelor of Arts in environmental studies, Christine Shar-
ples a Bachelor of Arts in geography, Rebecca Bravi a
Bachelor of Science in biology, Kim Hewgill a Bachelor
of Science in forestry, Shawn Munson a Bachelor of

Science in forestry and Miguel Viveiros a Bachelor of
Science in forestry.

Social service
agencies told
to cut costs

AGENCIES that provide services for the Ministry of Chil-
dren and Families are being ordered to trim 1,5 per cent
out of their contracts,

Ministry assistant deputy minister Vaughan Dowie told
service contractors at a meeting here last month the cuts
will produce savings of about $10 million.

Those savings are to join about $63 million in other
savings and cuts planned by the ministry to make up a
shortfall of about $73 million in what’s needed this year,

Dowie said the ministry is expected to live within its
$1.5 billion budget this year. Last year it overspent the
budget and was forced to seek special spending warrants
from Victoria to finish the year.

“We're in a hole,”’ Dowie said. ‘“There’s nowhere for us
to go,”"

Programs affected include ones operated here by Terrace
and District Community Services, Ksan House Society, the
Child Development Cente, and others.

istry has been neglected while health and education spend-
ing continues to surge. teeter LS
Further cuts could hurt programs that look after children
and mentally handicapped adults, he added.
