_. remember Juanita Hatton,
This will be the first holiday
season since man landed on
fhe moon that fasn’t secn
Juanita organizing her annual
Golden Rule Society Goodie
Bag grocery distribution 10 the
needy.

Last Christmas was her last,
She completed her final gro-
cery hand-out to 133 residents
on Dec, 24, 1993 — about two
weeks before she passed away
on Jan. 7, 1994, at the age of
79.

Juanita was like a fairy god-
mother to the unemployed and
‘underprivileged in Terrace.

Her ‘‘socicty”’ was in reality
asocicly of about one,

' She almost singlehandedly
carried out her campaign each
Christmas.

Since settling in Terrace in
the winter of 1960, Juanita es-
tablished a reputation as a
dedicated person whose un-
selfish acts have improved the
lives of other less fortunate
members of the community.

_For 13 years from 1970 to
1983 she ran a small business,
known as the Golden Rule,
operaling from a small house
off Kalum St.

From there she helped find
jobs for the unemployed.

For the past 25 years, she
devoted much time and effort
‘oO organizing and collecting
donations to make hampers for
her Christmas eve tradition,

Each food hamper consisted
of a week’s worth of food for

All donations came from lo-
cal merchants and groups.

Juanita and a very small
crew of volunteers would
spend Christmas eve distribut-
ing the goodie hampers to lo-
cal needy residents.

Juanita will lonz be remem-
bered by the many she helped

over those 25 years,

So many remember her now,
in particular, because she was
a fixture at this time of year al
the Skeena Mall.

You could find her sitting at
a table, often all alone, selling
raffle tickets to raise money
for the needy.

Juanita Hatton is no longer
down here with us, But I am
darn sure she is up there look-
ing down on us, and likely
telling us off.

So if we could al] remember
her Golden Rule philosophy
~— “do without something
yoursclf if it’ll help somebody
else’* — I am sure everyone
will have a safe and merry
Christmas,

And Juanita Hatton, may yu
rest in peace.

A thought for today:
Christmas is a good excuse

Juanita Hatton
for making others giad.

For doing secret things, and
comforting the sad.

For playing Father Christ-
mas, Ta some folk who may
feel cold,

Some child who'd love to be
surprised, somebody now
grown old.
