wee .@- 16 Terrace Review — Wednesday, August 5, 1987 TRIATHALON TERRACE — The First Annual Skeena Valley Triathalon, Organized by Terrace. Rotarian Dale Greenwood, swept into Riverboat Days activities as an unknown to become a major event that promises nothing but growth. John Nelson of Prince ‘Rupert, the overall winner of the event, said at the awards night _ banquet, ‘‘It was great. I'll be back next year.” ' After the one-kilometer swim, at 40-kilometer bike ride and a 10-kilometer run, Nelson came in with an average speed of 25 km per hour in one hour, 57 minutes and 46 seconds. At the awards banquet that ‘followed, top prize winners, Nelson, who. finished first in the men’s single division, and Carlin Miroslaw of Stewart, first in the ladies’ single division with a time of 2:47:06, collected their prize of a free trip to California from Tom Laurie of Canadian AirLines International. . Other race winners in the men’s single category were se- cond place Brian Fuhr of Vic- toria in a time of 2:06:20, and _ third place Ray. Warner of Ter- ‘race who crossed 2:07:49. . Second in the ladies’ division was Ruth Keefe of Kitimat with a time of 3:16:42. _..The junior men’s title was taken by Brian O’Neill from Kitimat who finished with a time of. 2:28:57, and second was ‘claimed by Charles Nelson of rt who did well in all. Prince Rupe een .Tace, the line at events but was slowed by a flat tire during the biking portion of the race, Nelson still came in with a time of 2:54:52, - The mixed team of Teresa Lindseth, Tony Demelo and Derek Philips placed first in their category with a combined time of 2:11:51 and second went to the team of Tracy McFarland, Vince Sieman and Sati Manhas at 2:16:43. First place in the men’s team went to Kurt Schlegel, Bob Peacock and Gary Pettipas with a total of 2:25:10. Other racers finishing the who Greenwood | said, “didn’t make it into the top of their categories but put on a heck of an effort to complete the - | race, were Michael Jackson, Phil Lathum and Alvin Stewart. Greenwood said a lot was learned in the running of the triathalon but added, ‘‘We’re going to show them how it’s done in the next couple of years.”’ - CARDBOARD BOATS The Cardboard Boat Race, another first’ time event, was a crowd pleaser from start to finish. _ _ _ The race was won by the team of Hugh Bedard and Rick Tremblay in the Ray’s Camper Repairs entry which proved to be a sturdy and manueverable craft. — Second place arrival was. the Kermode Friendship entry of Challenge ‘87, and third went to the. relatively, -unco-ordintated crew in the Riverboat Days — Society entry named Orca. a ~"Soore four hits for sports ¢ Two other boats in the race, the Kermode Cuties who got no more than 10 feet from shore before disolving- into paper mache, and Terrace Builders who almost made the half way: point, provided the entertain- ment factor in the event. BATHTUB RACES Some noisy but surprisingly fast. bathtubs took to the waters of Lakelse Lake to entertain rac- ing fans of a more sophisticated nature. . . Lloyd. In the first heat Charles Farr- ington in a Port Edward Marine entry came in second, and Wilf Young claimed third with the Kaien Kar Kare/Motorways tub. The second heat saw Pete’s Trading Post vessel driven by Peter Marshall come in second and Gary Forester in the Port Ed Marine tub finish third, Second place in the third and final heat was taken again by Peter Marshall, and Wilf Young in the Kaien Kar/Motorways en- try claimed third. 7 _ BELLY FLOP CONTEST First place in the annual Ter- varnits” ay. race Kinsmen Belly Flop Contest - held during the Terrace Fun Day at George Little Memorial Park went to Paul Wilkinson for his effort in creatng the biggest ‘Splash in a splash-off with Steve MclIsaac.
