Neilson said after Montreal
Canadiens advanced to a
record 25th National Hockey
League final appearance
with a 2-0 win Tuesday night
and 4-0 sweep of their best-
of-seven semi-final.

“But if you have to, I'd
rather lose to a great team
like the Canadiens. They're
well-balanced and extremely
well coached.

“J can’t see anyone
beating them—this year
anyway. ”

The Canadiens had no
trouble with an inferior

ficult—to record his 10th ca-
reer playoff shutout in 90 ap-
pearances.

CONTROLLED GAME

The Canadiens owned the
puck for most of the game,
and when the Leafs did get a
chance at it, they were
forced to shoot from long
range,

The Leafs, who improved
in almost every offensive
and defensive category this
year, never really were close
in any of the four semi-final
games. It appeared they
wsed up most of their energy
in beating New York
Islanders in an extremely
physical quarter-final series
that stretched the full seven
games.

“The Islanders said that
was the toughest series they
had ever been involved in,”
Neilson said. “Our players
wouldn't say it, but I’m sure
they agreed.”

Guy Laflew of the
Canadiens had much the
same opinion as Neilgon.

“Maybe they were too
tired from their series

against - the Islanders,” he
said. “They came off.a
gruelling series and we took
advantage of the reat we had
before playing Toron' .

Montreal now has to sit
back and wait for its op-
ponent in the final, which at
this point, looks like Boston
Brulns. The Bruins beat
Philadelphia Flyers 4-2
Tuesday night to take a 3-1
lead in on semi-final.

The Canadiens met the
Bruins in the final last year
and swept that series in four
straight games. '
FAVORED IN FINAL

As Neilson said, the Cana-
diens appear to’ be a shoo-in
for their third consecutive
championship season, a feat
accomplished only three

times before. Toronto turned
the trick twice, from 1047-49
and 1962-64, while Montreal
won the cup five straight
yeara from 1956-60,

Montreal has appeared in 36
playoff games, winning 32 of

“But, look, I could go

are hurt,’ said McDonald
who had three playoff goals

but was scoreless against the
Canadiens.

“Sure we could use it as an
excuse, say that if we had
had Borje (Salming) and had
Tiger (Williams), we could
have beat Montreal. But we
were without Borje for the
last three games against the
Islanders and we won. My
wrist was cracked when I
scored the winning goal in
the seventh game.”
