Noting that the Vancouver Labor Council, the B.C. Federation of Labor, Building Trades, Vancouver NDP constituency associations and numerous community leaders had backed his campaign, Yorke echoed others in terming the unity “‘historic. For the first time, the progressive forces are united behind a single candidate,” he said. He added that the unity had had “‘an exhilarating effect on campaign workers” but emphasized that the “mood had to be organized to ensure a massive turnout on election day. Campaign co-managers Margaret Birrell and Fred Wilson told the meeting that the campaign would extend right across the city and urged supporters to volunteer for the telephone canvass, a leaflet drop Jan. 12 and work on E-Day Feb. 2.
