They want war, period. War on the Soviet Union and the Socialist world, and are more brazenly open about it than the most diehard warmonger. in U.S. ruling circles. Like Chancellor Konrad Aden- auer of West Germany they de- clare in advance what must be done, and not done, at the May 16 Summit meeting in Paris. AFL- _ CIO president George Meany key- noted “policy” for U.S. represent- atives at the Summit. “There must be no appeasement of Khrush- chev,” Meany boomed, “our lead- ers at the conference table must show the Communists that. we have the determination, the re- Sources and the power .. . to deter _ any aggressor,” etc. and so forth. The late “massive retaliation” John Foster Dulles. never did State department, tep military brass and other Specie of U.S. » Sabre-rattlers were also on the guest-speaker rostrum of the AFL-CIO. war pow-wow. Under- secretary of State Douglas Dillon _ told the trade union fat boys that _the “Western powers (read U.S.) weuld not allow West Berlin to be sold into slavery ... the first im- perative is to maintain our mil- itary strength .. . to deter the Communists.” Strange talk for a nation going 0a Summit meeting, convened for the purpose of talking disarm- ament and peace, but not so strange in such a gathering of Labor’s high - salaried misleaders and parasites. AFL-CIO vice-president Walter P. Reuther gave voice to a current boast we hear occasionally in Can- ada, viz., that “free world labor is 0 tive anti-Communist force in the world,” while another _ AFL-CIO pundit, George M. Har- ege . Not labor leaders rallying their ranks in support of the Summit to assure its initial. success in the first practical steps towards total disarmament and peace, but cor- rupted machine - made burocrats, echoing the anti-Communist hate of the powerful monopolists and warmongers they ape; and utiliz- ing their high-salaried position and resources to Sabotage the Summit meeting. In this, these Chamber-of-Com- merce “trade unionists” not only disgrace and betray the millions they are well paid to serve, but act as a powerful roadblock to the great army of organized labor pulling its full weight for peace, disarmament, and mutual ¢o- existence. Labor must repudiate such “conferences” of its. coldwar top brass, and give its full support to the most vital cause of mankind — the winning of peace and disarm- . ament at the Summit, : ANADA’S Bomarc B “defence” weapon, on recommendation of a U.S. congressional committee, is going to be scrapped. The U.S. congressmen have decided that a ninety percent failure in Bomarc B tests make that missile “a ques- tionable weapon at best.” U.S. Representative Dan Flood of Pennsylvania said the State Department had continued with its Bomare B program mainly be- cause of political repercussions. Such consideration is touching, to say the least. Flood wound ug his ’ observations with what may be- come a classic on Tory government at Ottawa with the wisecrack: “Td rather be a senator from Cuba this week than the Defence Min- ister of Canada.’ The continued Pollyannaish “optimism” of our defence min- ister “Blimp” Pearkes in the Bo- mare B and his “faith” that it would ultimately get off the ground. and probably go in the general direction intended, has. often bordered on the senile. Even when its Yankee promoters were getting set to write it off Pearkes has been filling columns of press : A labor fakers ‘summit’ Bomarc down the drain balderdash anout his “confidence” in the Bomarc buy. 5 With millions of the taxpayers’ dollars squandered on the Bomarc B now following the Avro-Arrew jet interceptor down the arms drain, the Diefenbaker “defence program not only stands out as totally bankrupt, but Canada _ stands out = as an experimental backyard for US. warmongers and armament manufacturers; : backyard in which the residen guinea pig pays through the nose for its own extermination. i j his Thus it may be said at t precise moment of history that all we have to show for the billions ~ ndered on obsolete arms for Spalted “defence” is a decade of Liberal and Tory hot air from Ottawa, plus a minister of defence in an advanced state of senility. This, and the dignity, independ- | ence, and resources of a nation ‘subordinated to the whims, pol- icies and profits of U.S. merchants of death. d Now that the Yanks are burying — “defence,” >the 4 Canadian people should follow our Bomarc: B suit and bury the Tories; cut loose from U.S. war entanglements; and use our own resources to build for peace — the only real defence in a nuclear age. Tom McEwen RE you a “Discontent” or a “Malcontent?” Think carefully before deciding your category, Since it may affect your. entire future. eat A U.S. Chamber of Commerce panel of experts have been doing exhaustive research on the matter and have wrapped up their pro- found conclusions in a’ pamphlet entitled ‘“‘The Promise of Economic Growth.” Extracting what little solids this Chamber of Commerce alphabet _ Soup contains, it boils down to this. If a worker is discontented with his lot as a cipher in an army. of 4¥%-million U.S: unemployed, and hankers to be president of the. USA, or at the very least president of General Motors or the Steel progress” even if the next meal of “Discontent” is nowhere in sight. But a “Malcontent,” phooey; that can be “channeled into efforts to Trust, such “discontent leads to. overthrow the existing system,” and the C-of-C literary cooks don’t like that recipe one little bit. Where too many MalcOntenis con- gregate, ‘“‘the doctrines of revolu- tion gain the upper hand over those of evolution.” Remarkable how much hangs on a single word! * * * (News report that A. E. ‘“Dal” Grauer, president of the B.C. Power Commission and B.C. Elec- tric will visit the USSR soon). An outstanding authority on power development and distribu- tion, a la “free enterprise,’ Mr. Grauer will undoubtedly have the opportunity of seeing the giant Soviet “Reddy Kilowatt” at work. - Not only at work, but delivering his life-giving strength from scores of gigantic hydro and other power stations, any one of which dwarfs _ anything ‘Dal’ has even seen or imagined. ae ee Moreover the distinguished visitor to the USSR. will probably . learn that Soviet. “Reddy” does. his job for the householder or the vast. industrial plant at just about one- fiftieth the cost charged by his BCH Electric cousin: This is possible because Soviet “Reddy” is not — cluttered up with swarms of bond- holders, speculators, coupon-clip- pers or other specie of parasites _ slavery, Winch’s ‘““restraint” is a ~ tapping the power cables and add- ing their thefts onto consumer costs. . All in all we are happy to see Mr. Grauer making this trip. If it doesn’t result in a substantial lowering of our electric bill, it will at least enlighten the B:C. Electric chief that Soviet “Reddy Kilowatt” works for the people rather than the parasites. * * * Harold Winch, CCF-MP (Vancou- ver East) has scored again. Last week when South African govern- ment racist policies and its result- ant massacre of Negro peoples were being discussed in Parlia- ment, Tory Diefenbaker “thanked” Winch for his very commendable “restraint.” Harold’s restraint helped the Tories to (wordily) evade a govern- ment responsibility; that of giving. voice to the widespread indigna- tion of the Canadian people at the brutal murder and ruthless oppres- sion of the Black African people by. a Simon Legree minority gov- ernment of white overlords. Measured against South Africa’s murdered and oppressed Negro victims of apartheid racism and pretty shoddy article, fit only for _ Tory approval — and workingclass contempt. ~ : : ea May 6, 1960—PACIFIC TRIBUNE—Page 4
