From B5 Holes offer challenges also carried out complete- ly by club officials, who, Carruthers said, could bet- ter understand the lay of the land as opposed to out- side designers. Ten years and . about $1.75 million later, the course has a full-18 holes. Golfers will notice the first difference. when -they tee up at -numtber three. The hole has ‘been totally reconstructed and is play- ing as a°310-yard: par-four- straight into Capper Moun- tain, , The par three. fourth hole is in the pocket of Copper Mountain, “far to the southeast of the club- house and plays at 170 yards (or 143 depending on which tee you use), The fifth is a chailen- ging 332 yard par four with a slight dogleg left half- way, Most of the new holes appear on the back nine, as the course charts new territory to the east. The 10th is a lengthy par five of 510 yards, with a sharp right dogleg into the green, which is beside the club’s driving range. “Really good golfers will have a chance’ to make it to the preen in two,” Carruthers said, The 11th straddles some forest and Thornhill St. an the right and is a short but elusive 307 yard par four, with a sharp right bend. Perhaps the most stun- ning new view of the course comes from the high bluff which is the 12th tee. Looking east, a few of the new fairways and ponds are visible, while the clubhouse stands off in the distance perched on a hill. The 12th hole itself is a 212 yard downhill par three. From there, golfers will encounter the course’s new, longest par four, the 422 yard 13th, reduced to 334 yards from the closer tee. The hole demands straight shoating, as a lengthy water hazard fol- lows it on the right hand side all the way to the Breen. If water makes you ner- vous look out at the 14th, Both right and left offer some golfing nightmares at this 334 yard par four. Carruthers said the most challenging hole could be the par four 352 yard 15th. - Sorrounded by trees, the « lee area and beginning of the fairway on this hole is a narrow neck where ac- curacy and straightness will be paramount. If the narrow fairway isn’t enough here, there’s also water on the left to stir your nerves, Number 16 is a 173 yard par three, but don’t, | Whack the ball too hard with a low iron or else you'll end up in the creek past the hale. The 17th and 18th play as the old eighth and ninth holes where golfers will round out the back nine. Another addition to the course is a new kiosk, be- tween the ninth and 10th holes which will offer re- freshments to golfers on their way to the back nine. The kiosk also has flush toilets. If some of, fhe new fair- ways look a bit off, Carru- thers says time will green them up. “They take up ta three years to totally mature,” he said) “We met. our target date [for the course opening}, we just have’ a little casmetic work to do here and there.” B12 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, September 13, 2000 Super BM takes Bell Pole for The course’s total area - now covers 130 acres, double the acreage it was 10 years ago. Shoring a Heather Future” “Your Powder Smithers j ion” as Destination Hours of Operation - y setters : second time in three years By JACQUES CORSTANJE DURING THE Labour Day weekend, the Terrace Se- nior Men's Soccer Asso- ciation hosted the third an- nual Bell Pole Invitational Soccer Tournament at the Thornhill Regional field. Under blue skies and bright. sunshine, teams from Prince ‘Rupert, the Queen Charlotte Islands, Greenville and Terrace competed for prizes and the tournament trophy. On Saturday, during the round- robin portion of the tournament, it was the Back Eddy Internationals of Terrace beating the Greenville team by a score of 6-0 and tying the Prince Rupert team 3-3 to earn first place in their pool. In the other pool, Jock’s Pi- pers FC earned a hard fought victory over Ter- race’s perennial cham- pions, Super BM, by a score of 3-1. They also beat the Queen Charlottes team 8-2 to lock up first place. These placings earned the Internationals and Jocks Pipers a bye into the semi- finals. During the quarter-finals the Prince Rupert team was able to squeeze past the Queen Charlottes team 8-5 to advance to the semi-finals. The QCI team played hard, but had lost their keeper to injury dur- ing an earlier game and did not have a back up keeper in their line up. In the other quarter-fi- nals, Super BM advanced ‘ when Greenville was un- able to field a full team on Sunday morning. In the semi-finals, Prince Rupert and Jock’s Pipers played a defensive game in the first half with few scoring opportunities ~. for either side. The pipers were able to take the lead in the second half when Monday to Friday - 8:30 a.m. = 5 p.m. For more information call Ski Smithers Mark Viveiros scored an a penalty shot, followed by two goals from Craig Han- sen to take a 3-0 lead. Pipers’ keeper Tony Ri- beira was able to preserve the lead when he stopped a penalty, and saw another penalty shot bounce off the crossbar. Late in the game, Prince Rupert was able to put one past Ribeiro, for a final score of 3-1. The other semi-final - match was-a tight game between Terrace’s Super BM and Internationals teams. The score was tled al-two late in the game when Super BM scored to take the lead. Moments later, a rare defensive mistake cost Super BM as the [nterna- tionals were able to steal the ball and score on a break away. The game fin- ished tied, and in the gold- en goal overtime, Super BM’'s Corey Waldie placed a free kick around a wall of Internationals players and just inside the post to give Super BM the win. This set up a final game between Super BM and Jock’s Pipers. The Pipers took the lead part way through the first half when Gary Galuska rocketed a shot into the top corner. The Pipers nearly went up 2-0 when several good passes put Pipers’ Craig Hansen into the clear 15 yards in front of the net. Hansen’s shot beat the keeper but missed the net - by a foot. Super BM was able to tie the game in the second half when Brian McCon- nell scored during a scramble in front of the Piper's net. Midway through the second half, Super BM took the lead on a header by Mike Krisin- ger. With Super BM press- ing for another goal, the Pipers were able’ to: steal the ball and take it deep into Super BM’s net. A long cross by Gary Galus- ka found Pipers’ Roland Barton in front of the net, -and he made no mistake, heading it in. The game ended in a 2- 2 lie at the end of regula- tion time, and in overtime both teams had great chances to score. In the ‘first 10 minutes, Super BM’s Corey Trogi blasted one at the goal, but keeper Tony Ribeiro picked it out of the air, and at the other end Super BM’s Nick Buj- tas was also up to the task, stopping several Pipers shots. With five minutes re- maining in overtime Super BM’s Nilton Praticante broke past the Pipers de- fense and placed a shot past Ribeiro, into the net to give Super BM their second tournament title in iwo years.
