to the Nass LIBERAL politicians canceled a planned visit to the Nass Valley last week, saying they didn’t want to get in the way of the advanced poll for the Nisga’a treaty. MLAs Bonnie McKinnon, Ida Chong and Lynn Stephens had wanted to visit Nisga’a women in the valley to lcarn how the treaty would affect them. But they changed their mind to avoid the impres- sian they might be scen as influencing women to vote against the treaty. The ad- vance poll was Oct. 30, “It wasn’t politically cor- rect to do that,’ said McKinnon. ‘We want them to vote freely.’ The Liberal party opposes the treaty and has launched a court action which, if suc- cessful, could force a teferendum on the docu- ment. McKinnon said she and the other MLAs weren't mecting . with Nisga’a women in Terrace, either. When asked whether she’s encountered much backlash from locals here due to her party’s stance on the treaty, A8 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, November 4, 1999 Liberals cancel visit Valley LIBERAL LAS Lynn ‘Stephens, ida Chong and Bon- nie McKinnon were in Terrace last week to meet with community groups and to learn about local conditians and issues. Leader Gordon Campbell was also here. McKinnon said ~=—s many people have questioned her about it. She said what people don’t understand is that the Liberals aren’t opposed to treaties or negotiations. ‘We are the opposition and we're doing our job at opposing,’’ McKinnon said, ‘Our job is to find out what is good and bad about everything. It’s up to us as opposition to do this.’’ “Tf the Supreme Court says ‘no’ [it doesn’t affect the constitution], then it’s cleared up,’? she said. “We're not saying we have to have a referendum,”? The three MLAs spent time in Terrace meeting with various groups and listening to community con- cems. Their visit coincided with that of party leader Gordon Campbell. Way of life ending for west coast fishers THE FEDERAL government's voluntary buyback program for commercial fishers is anything but, says a director of a west coast advocacy group. "Ts it voluntary to have a policy that forces people to go belly up?” said Paddy Greene of the Pacific Fisheries Alliance. The program will see the federal govern- ment spend a majority of $200 million earmarked for Licence retirement, selective fisheries and diversification, says Steven Wright, a Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) communications director. Fishers who want to leave the industry now should fill out a bid application form by Nov, 20 and list the value they think their surrendered licence holds. An advisory committee made up of three independent members and three licence holders will cvaluate the bids and make recommendations to a senior DFO official. The program has been a long time coming for local fishers who have been unable to fish since David Anderson announced large-scale salmon closures last June, The closures have almost crippled native commercial fisheries, said John Helin of the Port Simpson advisory committee. ‘It really looks bleak,”’ said Helin adding Port Simpson fishers have become apathetic because the government hasn’t 75 DIABETES ‘SY AWARENESS SCREENING DAYS listened to the community’s concerns, He said a lot of native commercial fishers have been forced out of the business by new and expensive equipment requirements money, said, next season. that they haven’t been able to use, “A lot of people have already left,”’ be said. Helin added that the bid system pits fishers against each other because high bids will be thrown out so fishers will sell them- selves short just to make sure they get He also said a lot of fishers will be stuck with boats they won’t be able to sell be- cause of a flooded market. And retraining money won’t help because there’s not enough jobs. ‘‘There’s no log- ging, and we all can’t clean creeks,” Helin Wright says the buyback and consultation process — for fishers who need more time to decide what they want — is abont giving fishers a choice. But they shouldn’t be fooled. ‘“The licence buyback will help people leave the industry permanently — it’s not meant as a stop gap,'’ said Wright, And that would be fine for Greene, who knows the industry needs to shrink to sur- vive, The real question, he said, is how much salmon fishers will be able to catch Friday November 13, 1998 1:00 p.m. — 5:00 p.m. SAFEWAY PHARMACY 7 4655 Lakelse Terrace _ SAFEWA' James W.
