HAPPY GANG Party surprise for Vera By BEV GREENING IT .WASN’T just a party to celebrate Vera McKenzie’s 75th birthday, Tt was a surprise gathering of her family of six children — for the First time ever, The children themselves carricd out the surprise and held the party at the Happy Gang Centre on Sunday, Sept. 18. ~ It was attended by many firends as well as Vera’s six children — Eva from Toronto, Carol from Belleville, Ont, twin brothers Ron from Femie and Rick from Cranbrook, Vivian and Barry from Terrace. Also in attendance . was her sister, Thelma Berglund from Ontario. -Vera was born in Kennedy, Sas- katchewan in 1919 and had lived ‘in Cranbrook and Fort St. James prior to’ moving to Terrace in 1968... She is an active member at the B.C. Old Age Pensioners Organi- _ ‘gation, where she recently took over the management of all - games sponsored by the organiza- tion. This includes bingo, crib, carpet bowling and floor curling. _” She also helps at the monthly pancake breakfasts and assists in the kitchen when needed. Many of her crocheted pieces are ‘donated for the annual bazaar held by the BCOAPO. Her contri- butions are appreciated and she is wished many more happy - birthdays, _ Sprucing up ~The Happy Gang centre got a - much-needed face-lift over the “-SUILMEer, The addition of a new sign and planters has made it much more attractive to visitors. Allhough the centre is run for and by seniors, anyone can be- : come a member at a much ‘younger age — you’re just not al- lowed to hold office until age 55. Why would younger people | be- come members? - Since” many members are in their seventies, cighties or nineties, ‘helping hands are needed to assist with banquets, meetings, maintenance, cooking, ‘ . bazaars and other activities. Some young people have done $0 and have become acquainted wilh’ many people who have helped make this a great com- munity. * Jf you are interested in helping ‘seniors lo help themselves, this is the place for you.
