Pitch made for mobile home - TWO THORNHILL residents want to make sure a large pro- posed subdivision has lois for mobile homes, Pat Whimp, says she and her husband, Craig, have unsuccess- fully. searched for a lot for their mobile home for two years now. The land for the proposed sub- division is near the community centre and could contain as many as 200 lots. It's provincial Crown land and the idea is to work up a develop- ment plan and then sell it and the Jand asa package to adeveloper. Initial plans are to have lois set aside for single family homes, have space for apartments and land dedicated to low cost hous- ing. Land will also be set aside for parks and recreation. But first the plan must pass through the regional district and the Whimps want to make sure it and the province know that people want mobile home lots in- cluded in the development “T phoned and was told there would be no lols for mobile . homes, I fon soe oat’ Tight,” Said, Whim tas ve nicete! ‘hsband “move ‘ane 1% ae Shean @ rey Ya Firefighters oppose cuts THE UNION that represents air- port firefighters isn’t impressed with Transport Canada plans to cut the number of those employ- ces across Canada, “We think it’s totally atro- cious,’’ said Alan Phillips, regional vice-president for the Union of Canadian Transport Employees. Transport Canada plans .to eliminate three firefighter jobs at the Terrace airport, reducing firehall staff from seven to four, They'd do that by buying a new high-tech fire truck that would be able to spray as much fire retar- dant as the existing two trucks — and could be operated by just one firefighter, “We don’t think the . one- vehicle, one-operator policy is safe,” Phillips said last week. He sald the most other counties have -adopted — international recommendations {0 provide Tescuc-trained personnel — not just firefighters. So far Canada has resisted those moves, he said, adding that has opened the deor to further cuts in firefighting services, “They're interested in putting the fire out but they’re not inter- ested in having firefighters on the ground to rescus passengers,”’ Phillips explained. . “They say that they can sit there with one truck and one firefighter and spray foam to. put out the fire. That's entirely pos- Thornhill from Stewart two years ago and now live in a trailer park, They’ve been frustrated in their search for a mobile home lot be- cause there hasn’t been any Crown land made available in Thornhill and because there .are very few private lots being sald for mobile homes. _ “There are other people. in our trailer park that want land, but they’re stuck because they can’t find land either,” said vee. But what about the poor people inside the plane?’’ Phillips also maintains under the existing policy, the Terrace airport fire hall doesn’t get as many staff as it deserves. That’s because Transport Cana- da courts only the flights that ac- tually land for purposes of determining how many firefighters are needed. If all flights scheduled to land in-.Terrace — including missed approaches — were included, says Phillips, the airport would Move up a category and would get one more truck and two more firefighters, “The. situation in Smithers is even more dire, Phillips said. _ Airport firefighters will be eliminated altogether there, he said, with plans to contract the service out fo municipal firefighters, That type of service is com- pletely unacceptable given the distance from the Smithers fire hall to the airport, he said. “it’s going to be 15 minutes be- fore they get there and that plane is going to be gone,’ Phillips said. ‘I am going to be gone if I can’t crawl out of it myself.” — He said the firefighting jobs in _ Smithers don't end until next April 1.
