~ Celtic- blues _ fusion | ~ Back in the north They're back, _. Bourne and MacLeod, who kept crowds in a frenzy during their appearances at the Eight An- nual Midsummer Music Festival are back in Smithers for two nights of foot-stomping, hand- clapping and genuine rip-roaring music. The March 28 and 29 shows, sponsored by the Bulkley Valley Folk Music Society, will be split - between a dance at Evelyn Hall and a concert the following night at Smithers Senior Secondary School’s auditorium. Dance tickets are sold out, but lots are still available for the concert. _ The music industry occasionally casts up some ‘strange but exotic delights. Bill Bourne and Alan MacLeod fit such a description. Bourne’s a country blues guitarist from Alber- ta, while MacLeod is a rock *n roll highland war- piper from Scotland. Together they create a ‘brand of diverse roots music that critics have won them a 1991 Juno award for best - roots/traditional recording. Bourne’s career stems from the Mississippi John Hurt-Doc Watson folk genre. His inter- pretation of traditional country blues styles has been critically acclaimed. However, his real forte is song-writing. MacLeod has done for warpipes what Charlie - Christian did for guitar. He gives an instrument . normally used for laments and dirges and oboe- ; F like clarity, with austere, modal solos propelled by precisely accentuated rhythmic phrases. He’s been hailed by critics on both sides of the Atlan- tic as an innovator and a virtuoso. As a highlight to the dance, which is a belated St. Patrick’s Day celebration, a limerick contest will be held. The limerick's opening line must be . “While dancing one night, I saw Evelyn....""
