Alec Guiness’ memoirs, Blessing in Disguise (Col-
lins:22.50) shows the actor to be a subtle and ac-
complished writer. .

This witty, humane and highly entertaining collec-
tion of portraits and anecdotes lightly traces Guiness’

career from his birth, father-unknown and sought
after, through his early years on the stage, his war ef-
fort (in a chapter aptly entitled “‘Damage to the
Allied Cause’’) to his later successes on film and in
theatre. ;
Along the way we meet Larry Olivier, Gielgud,
Raiph Richardson, Edith Evans, Martita Hunt —
wonderful portrait and many others. He has an eye
