- 19 = Transit service coverage has also deteriorated in recent years. It is estimated that only 80% of the population of the Northeast Sector is within walking distance (450 metres) of a bus route. The largest neighbourhoods not served by transit include Eagle Ridge, River Springs, Noens Creek and beth south and north sides of Port Coquitlam. If the Barnet corridor is considered separate from Western Coquitlam, transit service coverage extends to only 72% of the corridor population. 4.2.2 1985/86 Strategies for Northeast Sector The Annual Service Plan has proposed the establishment of a ridership target on the Barnet corridor for 1985/86. The Barnet corridor was selected for the following reasons: i) The Barnet corridor is growing rapidly in terms of overall travel demand (forecast 4.5% for 1985/96). ii) Existing peak hour bus ridership is very high, with some loads exceeding the service design guidelines. Many new residential areas (ie. Eagle Ridge, River Springs) are not served by transit. iv) The Barnet corridor is not significantly impacted by ALRT during the first phase of operation. This will involve koth filling existing availabie capacity and providing additional capacity to meet the projected demand. Based on the above the following ridership targets have been established: sated betel Increase transit mode split from 25% to 29% Increase peak period transit ridership by 19% Accommodate an additional 210 peak period transit trips 4.2.3 Proposed 1985/86 Service Changes A number of service changes have been proposed to routes in the Northeast Sector in order to achieve the ridership target. The changes, for the most part, involve improving peak period service to capture new trips while at the same time allowing for implementation of the service design guidelines to ensure that existing services are. operating efficiently and effectively. The objective of generating a 19% growth in peak period ridership can best be achieved by focussing on the following areas: Increase transit capacity during peak periods on the Barnet corridor »etween the Northeast Sector and Vancouver. . ist} 5 oe ee ae meet eS "Ate
