Vancouver Collects o • •••••• Celebrating work in private local collections, the exhibition Vancouver Collects focuses on three areas of collecting: the Group of Seven, photography and contemporary art. It is an opportunity to laud serious collecting in our community, to consider how public collections are built together with private philanthropists and to view a significant number of works by eminent artists. .Q Between Passion and Logic: Contemporary and Modern Art • ••••• ' October 6, 2001-February 10, 2002 X Myfanwy MacLeod Study for "Thought/' 1998 Vacuum-formed plexiglas. Confirmed artists include: Robert Ashley, Rebecca Belmore, Trolley Bus, Diane Landry, Glenn Lewis, Louise Moyes, Mirha Soleil Ross, Victoria Stanton, Alvin Tolentino, Josie Tremblay, Michael Turner and Judy Radul. Between Passion and Logic: Contemporary and Modern Art examines the significant holdings of works by prominent contemporary and modern artists in private Vancouver collections. It presents a selection of work through the following thematic groupings: Abstraction: High and Low, The Mark of the Body, Pop and the Culture of Everyday, and Re-Imagining Place: Nature, the Domestic and Beyond. Examples of modern abstraction, pop art, conceptualism and other current practices are threaded through these themes in order to examine the interests of collectors. Reflecting a history of art production locally, nationally and internationally, the selection situates local practices within an international context and speaks to the seriousness and breadth of contemporary collections in this city. Vancouver's reputation for contemporary work, cemented by a photoconceptualist dialogue, has put this city on an international art map. Many of the Vancouver collections highlighted reflect an international dialogue and span a period beginning in the 1960s and continuing to the present day. This section will include painting, prints, drawing, photography, video and sculpture.
